A lone man carries the last Bible across a post-apocalyptic wastland, guided by a voice he believes to be God. Yes, it's preachy. But it never gets too bad. There's a pretty cool twist at the end that made me smile.
Denzel is great as usual, but it's Gary Oldman who steals the show. He's terrific.
The action is ho-hum. Never boring, but you will rarely be excited. It's cool, but not mind blowing.
The Cinematography is B-E-A-utiful. The wastland is stunningly realized and is very believable.
There are some weird parts, like Gary Oldmans bald henchmen who acts very strange at the end of the film. Can't say any more without spoiling things.
Best part of the movie is when Denzel and the girl who's with him come across an old couple in a beat up house. It's very funny and is a must see scene.
Overall... Decent. Worth a look if you're interested.
Thanks for the review...... I remember watching this movie trailer on TV and i thought it was wesley snipes. When i see it was Denzel i was excited. He looks great .
I have to disagree Zack, this is a very preachy film, even more so than passion of the Christ, still it is a cool movie with some wicked kills, I just wished the religious propaganda was toned down a bit, but it is a fun movie......and you are right about that twist, it was pretty cool and makes a lot of sense.
It was the tone of the film, all the prayers, and the scene with denzel and that chick from that 70's show at the camp fire, it felt like sunday school, the last 10 min is very heavy handed, the fact that the bible is supposed to be the only way to bring everyone together. I could tell that the film was trying to push Christianity, but I did like the movie, I'm just not a fan of propaganda.
I agree, this was a good flick. I saw it last weekend along with AVATAR and it's a great example of how going into a movie with certain expectations can color how much you enjoy it. I'm like Frank Costanza, I like to go in fresh. I honestly wasn't expecting much and thought Denzel at his age would come off a little cheesy, but it definitely worked.
For what it’s worth, I didn’t find the tone overly preachy though I could see how some might see it that way. I thought there was a nice mix of action and message in this film.
As splatterboy mentioned the cinematography was great. I think I read that most of this was filmed in the New Mexico desert which accounts for the starkness of the terrain.
With regard to the Oldman’s henchman (Ray Stevenson who played Titus Pullo in HBO’s Rome – took me awhile to get that), I kind of got the impression that he came around to Eli’s way of thinking in the end. And yes, Oldman was terrific. Sometimes I think he can go a bit overboard, but he was great in this flick.
The ending, without giving it away, was so-so for me. IMO it really asked a lot from the audience in terms of suspending believability. All in all though, good movie.
Finally got around to seeing this flick. I remember wanting to see it at the theater, but not making it before it was gone. I'm glad I missed it.
I was very unhappy with this. To say it underwhelmed is a HUGE understatement.
I like Denzell Washington...and I liked him here too. He did a great job, with what he had to work with.
The action scenes were very well choreographed and filmed. Actually, the entire film had a cool look to it.
The story, though...damn...terrible. How many times have we been there and seen this? How many films come to mind while watching this? Let's just say ALOT!
Unlike the others here, I was very unimpressed with Gary Oldman...or maybe it was his role that didn't work for me. I've always liked him as an actor and think he's given some top notch performances over his career. But everything about him here was a big old cliche. The big bad guy with all the henchmen doing his bidding for him, for some reason or another.
It's funny, cause when I receive a Netflix video, I try and watch it that same night, so I can get it back in the mail the next morning, meaning, more DVD's to watch. My girlfriend and I had this one for over a full week. We sat down to watch it on 3 occasions and never made it though. I finally just finished it on my own to get it the Hell out of here.
Very lame movie. The Hughes Brothers spent $80 Million on this thing, and I'm just amazed. It made $157 Million World Wide, so that's good for them. Sure glad they didn't get my $10!
I actually liked this one. Okay, so they tried to make "The Road" with a bunch of action in it but I was entertained throughout. Awesome soundtrack too.
Down in the hole / Jesus tries to crack a smile / Beneath another shovel load
The Road is a fantastic movie. Depressing as hell, really, but a fantastic journey. Don't expect an action flick though. This is pure drama (albeit with a couple of scary scenes in it). Viggo is amazing.

Movie sucked. Even visually. Can't understand why anyone thinks bleach bypass looks cool. It literally erases any personality to the film. Speaking of personality, what's with Gary Oldman? One could say he did a good job with what he had to work with but I still felt he took it in a really obvious direction. Tom Waits was a tease. Denzel Washington is... well, Denzel Washington. Honestly, I think the guy's a good actor but has bad taste in movies.
Worst thing was probably the fact that it tried to be preachy while simultaneously trying not to offend anyone, not to mention it all comes from the same guy who, frankly, I didn't buy having the entire Bible memorized.
Think this is one of those flicks Tarantino so referred to as limp dick movies.
This movie got slammed by the critics so I had very low expectations for this one.
Watched it and was plesantly surprised. Nothing great. Just a fun movie.
How can you say this movie was preechy? I don't get it. It doesn't push a propoganda, its just a fable about a man chosen by God to do God's work. No diffent to the stories in the Bible. I felt the movie was more Biblical then preechy.
I actually enjoyed this one more then The Road that was a movie with a compelling and realistic look at the collaspe of civilzation. but I found the story to be very tedious and the ending just spat in the eye of its own logic.
