Kevin Smith goes outside his comfortable realm of writing and in my opinion this movie pulls off a decent showing.
I went and saw this last weekend and the cinema was pretty bare. I was a bit nervous after reading a few dozen negative reviews just bashing the hell out of this film making it sound like the worst film ever made.
This movie as of right now has already made up its budget at the box office so I'm happy as a fan of Kevin Smith.
Tracy Morgan is probably going to be the sticking point for many people. He's annoying and a little over the top. I think Smith should have cast Chris Rock to play this role as he's not as annoying. Not saying I dislike Morgan but he can be hard to believe as an actor.
Sean William Scott actually steals this movie and this is the case with a scene after the credits starring him.
This movie felt like Kevin Smiths first complete film (Containing acts and a story that flows)
Guillermo Díaz, Adam Brody and Kevin Pollak also put in a decent supporting showing.
Hopefully when it is released on DVD Smith puts an effort into the extras with a commentary and all the good stuff he usually adds.
Overall I would say Cop Out is above average, not great but good enough for fans and non fans to enjoy unless they hate Tracy Morgan.
I thought this was pretty horrible all around and am in awe that it has any fans. It's complete shit, and this is coming from someone who likes almost ANYTHING. Easily one of the laziest comedies I've ever scene. So unfunny it's kinda painful. Some fat ugly chick sitting infront of me kept laughing, and finally I snapped. I asked her what she thought was so funny, and she just shrugged and said "I don't know, that black guy looks like a baby and he keeps saying homage." Ugh. I have lost a lot of faith in Kevin Smith after this poopfest.

Wow, why didn't you just leave instead of insulting someone's sense of humor?
Because I thought maybe I was missing something. But I wasn't! It's because of people like her that shit like this makes money. It was the same damn thing with Couples Retreat... Why is that stuff funny!? Nothing pisses me off more than a bad comedy.
I saw this today instead of Bad Lieutenant, which has had some great reviews, where Cop Out has been pounded in every other review I've read. I had to give Kevin Smith a chance as I am a huge fan of his. I thought this was watchable, nowhere near as bad as I was led to believe.
Tracy Morgan wasn't a problem for me. I liked the opening interrogation sequence, even laughing out loud at the Die Hard reference. Sean William Scott steals every scene he is in, although I missed the scene after the credits. Bruce Willis was okay, although he was been in this movie one hundred times before.
The main problem was the length, 15-20 minutes could be cut here and make this a better film with all the funny parts closer together. I know Smith has problems with this as I remember reading the first cut of Zack and Mirri was well over 2 hours. I would have cut Adam Brody and the other guy's characters as I felt they brought no laughs at all.
Maybe a 6/10, but could have been better if it was a little shorter. Still, at least Smith tried to make a different movie this time. Now, how about Clerks 3?
