Well, I've seen alot of absolutely terrible movies, but I think this one just may be the very worst movie I've ever seen.
Now, keep in mind what i just said...worst movie I've ever seen...problem is that I could barely see this movie, as the lighting and camera work was worse than an 8 year old with a video cam.
This was written and directed by the dude who wrote and directed Paranormal Activity, (EDIT - INCORRECT!!!!! It was The 4th Kind) and was shot on a whopping budget of $150,000. Does it show? Uh...fuck yeah, it does!
Within the first few minutes, things "look strange". Our group of protags are sitting around a campfire, laughing and completely adlibing (in the special features, it's made clear that at times, the actors didn't even know when they were being shot, so much of this thing is adlibbed). What looks strange, is the campfire.
I remember, as I was watching, I kept saying out loud, something's wrong here...this doesn't look right. Well, sure enough, I come to find that the camp fire was digitally added, because they didn't have enough money to pay park officials for a permit to allow open fires. Huh? WTF? For real? Yeah, for real! In a later scene inside teh cave, there's another digital fire burning, also.
Once they go into the cavern, it's seriously almost impossible to tell what's going on...or why. They shot this on some sort of digital film without lighting, other than the helmet lights, everyone was wearing, and it's just crazy how bad it looks. It's also done in an intentional Blair Witch style, complete with shaky camera, and even some upside down footage, although none of it is supposed to be POV. AS the tension mounts (in the Director's mind, that is), the camera work goes all shaky...like an earthquake's taking place or something. It's just crazy how bad it is!
There are numerous instances where the screen just goes completely black and this will last for up to about a minute, with nothing but meaningless screaming and yelling. Actually, these were the best scenes, as my eyes didn't hurt at all while watching them, and I knew I wasn't missing anything, since it was an intentional black screen.
Wait till you get to the ending! Oh my God! Unreal! Out of left field, the mystery is explained with a few flashbacks, and then the finale, which you won't believe...but...you won't know what just happened either unless you do some digging on the internet because it's impossible to see. It's terrible though, anyway you "look" at it.
This is one of those movies that isn't so bad it's good. There's nothing redeeming here at all. I can't recall getting so angry while watching a movie before in my life.
Ha1 Mega Piranha was sooo much better than this crap. MP was funny...and good in all its badness. This thing doesn't have a second of worthwhile viewing, cause you really can't see more than a few seconds of film anyways.
Check out some reviews on Netflix if you're doubting me.
Yeah, I've picked up "The Cavern" (I'm a sucker for cheap horror flicks), and it is indeed very bad. As I recall I couldn't finish it. But Grizzy Rage is the WORST movie I've ever seen. I could make a better movie about a killer kitten (oh shit... I just thought up my next script!).
