Megan Fox in a western, that's already a terrible idea and I'm a fan of Megan Fox. The movie was so poorly put together, so cliche and so bad that I have to say I had a great time watching it. There was just something so corny about this movie from everything that came out of Jonah's mouth to the cliche floating wanted poster that gave me such mindless entertainment. I saw this in a double feature at the drive in with Inception... which in contrast, are quite different movies in quality but Jonah Hex was such a guilty pleasure for me. The movie consists of Jonah Hex basically being bad ass the whole time, getting in a situation for two point two seconds where you wonder how he will get out but ends up doing some rediculous move to get out of it followed by a some terrible "bad ass" dialogue (he's the new Chuck Norris in my books).. over and over. This isn't a movie I would suggest to anyone but I had a good time!
Jonah Hex was butchered by the studio. They hated the orignal cut (of which Will Arnett and Micheal Shannon had much larger roles) of the movie so much that they brought in a new director to film an entirely different movie(this one with Megan Fox! haha). However, the studio disliked this cut as well, so they smashed both movies together (the red desert dream fight at the end was the original ending) and released the turd in cinemas. Worst movie, or is that movies?, of the year.
Not as bad as I feared. Solid entertainment with Megan Fox as a hooker... I'm not going to argue with that. Some of the lines were quite funny actually, and Brolin was great. I agree with kev, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure. 6/10
Very poor...but not piss poor. I had little interest in it, but my girlfriend said she actually enjoyed it.
Running time of 1 hour and 21 minutes...WTF? Shocking...and a big issue, IMO. Nothing was brought to life, no relationships seemed real...actually, nothing felt remotely real.
I've heard of the nightmares that plagued this production and it's really too bad that professionals with unlimited gobs of money and talent can't put together a decent movie.
IMO, the single biggest issue here is that every single character is ugly (either physically or mentally). There just isn't anyone to route for, really, is there? Josh Brolin's makeup is not good, and I really question why they chose to make him look so ugly.
It's funny, cause in many ways, this resembles a horror movie, which again, is just completely misguided. Shocking how violent the film is, and also how mean spirited it is. Again, that just ain't gonna fly for a Summer big budget flick, trying to appeal to the masses.
And, BTW, WTF were those orange sphere-things? Did I miss something?

In the comic book, Jonah Hex, Hex's face was scarred by Indians after he was accused of cheating in a fight-to-the-finish with an Indian. I don't remember if they burned him with a red hot tomahawk or if there was acid on the tomahawk or whatever, but he got that look after becoming a bounty hunter.
I haven't seen the movie, but I think they rewrote his face.
I read through the 126 page script by the original directors, the Crank pair. After getting kicked off Hex, they went and made Gamer with Gerard Butler. I bowed out after about 50 pages, too many on camera bowl movements for me. After the third one in twenty pages, I put down the script. There was this whole voodoo angle and undead sheriff crap they took out. The theatrical cut is a pretty crude hatchet job, 73 minutes without credits, yikes. It doesn't seem the boxoffice failure of this and Scott Pilgrim are slowing down Hollywood. They are still gobbling up many "B and C tier" comic properties to develop.
E.D.
LATEST NEWS CineVita Films is producing a short based on my new feature!
The comic book was a straightforward western series. No crazy weapons or supernatural characters... atleast until the end of the series when some brainiac decided to somehow have him leap through time an plant him in a Mad Max-type world.

It is not the popularity of the characters in question. It is how the essence of the characters are treated and/or how good/bad the film itself is.
The case of Jonah Hex is an interesting one. The character's "popularity" in terms of comics didm't rise until DC introduced more supernatural and sci-fi elements. That's the angle the overpraised duo of N/T took. As a directing team, they have the guerrilla style going for them. As writers they stink. The biggest plothole of Crank is the joke, and we aren't meant to take it seriously. The same with the sequel. It's a brainless ride with zip and zing. They hit the gas and not the brake. If they slow down for too long the rubber band snaps.
I'm not a huge fan, but I think they can handle Ghost Rider 2 okay for some reason.
But back to Hex.
The stuff that "the fans" (yawn) loved in the comics- the supernatural and fantasy stuff was a big change out of the dark western format of the 70s and early 80s. The character would have worked if they stuck to that side of the character with a hint of mysticism, but not to outright make it a plot point.

Exactly.
But I knew the film was in trouble the moment they cast Megan Fox. I'll admit, with a little work Jimmy Hayward (the director) should have paid more homage to Howard Hughes, giving her more of a Jane Russell/Outlaw inspiration. But that would require thought.

he's the new Chuck Norris in my books
Chuck Norris was not only better in the zinger department, but the VO work too. That's not a huge endorsement, but he was entertaining. You also got to see some decent stunts, fights and explosions.
I wanted Brolin to keep his mouth shut. Especially in that post credits opening. What a shot! Jonah Hex, all mystery man, three men dragged by his horse. Bad Mayor says 'Where's the fourth guy?" Hex rosses him the bag. Imagine if Hex SHIT HIS MOUTH. And we see crazy eyes.
No...it has to go camp. It has to be stupid. Hex takes a drink, it spills out of his cut up burned mouth. Ho Ho Ho.
I don't want to say anymore. I want to make it big so I can REBOOT REMAKE RETCON this.........thing.... Even if it's a DTV sequel.
Better yet, let sleeping (dead) dogs lie and give me an Enemy Ace flick WB.
