Japanese. This film is based on a Japanese graphic novel character and it's the second of a series of movies about Kitaro. I like the first movie but not as much as I liked this second one.
Kitaro is a half-human, half-spectre creature a spirit the Japanese might have a small shrine to, a Yokai, as are his gang Ratman, Cat-girl, Sand Witch and Old Cry Baby. They all have their own special things they can do. In Kitaros case he has a special ninja cloak and a porcupine hair.
In this movie they are trying to stop a musical curse that makes young girls disappear in the rain. They want help a human - which is something frowned upon in the spirit world - who is eagerly sought by the evil Yokai behind the curse.
It's a very cute movie - obviously meant for the younger set - but some of the fantasy in this is so creative and fantastic. And some of the Yokai's special abilities are sooo funny. There was one forest Yokai who, once I realised what he was doing, had me on my ass laughing.
But there's also a good solid story here. You will definitely get caught up in it and the fantastic world the filmmaker has created.
Highly recommended. |
