Only someone would no sense of shame would say what I'm about to say: it wasn't that bad!
I actually watched this the other day when nothing was on. I was not much familiar with the legend, and the idea of a creature that's named after a moth seems absolutely ludicrous to me. Why no beetleman or butterflyman?
But they actually managed to put together a story here with attempts at something well thought out. There are conscious entities in another plane, beings whose consciousness is so different than our own that their contact with us is difficult for us to interpret.
Not saying it's a great movie, and it might be a case of low expectations on my part...and they could not have been lower. But I've seen much worse movies.
(Maybe Mothman should fight "the real Jersey Devil" in the sequel to Ill!)
I'd have to agree with you. I have the movie somewhere in my collection, so I enjoyed it enough to purchase it.
Like you, I had no idea about the Mothman going into the movie and found it quite interesting. The movie actually caused me to go home and read up the history and compare the true events from the movie events.
When it comes to horror movies, I usually rate them based on what their target audience is and what they are trying to deliver. Most horror movies rate poorly with critics (there are the exceptions ofcourse) and there are some horror movies that are downright terrible in every way. There are also the exceptions that define the genre.
When I watch a horror movie, I go in with expectations that match what the movie is trying to deliver upon. I find it easier to enjoy the movie that way.
Yep, this isn't bad, but I have few memories of it, and I've seen it at least twice, which isn't a great thing, obviously.
Wasn't this when Richard Gere's career was in a tailspin? I actually like him as an actor and appreciate the wide variety of roles he takes on.
I seem to remember that the major problem here was that it straddled the line between multiple genres and rally didn't hit home on any 1 in particular.
