Damn, this is an intense, well done film, and 800% better than the 1978 original, which I personally didn't think too much of.
Obviously, this movie isn't for everyone, nor should it be but if you're into extreme exploitation, violence, suspense, and even horror, this could be your new favorite flick.
This is everything that 2009's Last House on the Left remake should have been, but wasn't. This thing hits hard, takes no prisoners, and says fuck you to the MPAA.
Production quality is high here. The film really looks good. FX are awesome. Acting is shockingly great. Writing and direction are also top notch, IMO. It has a very gritty, realistic feel to it when it should, and then also has that "only in a horror movie" surrealism when it needs to, which actually works here every time.
The bad guys here are the worst of any lot you've probably ever seen. Complete dickhead, lowlife, fuckwads who deserve to die horrendously painful deaths...and don't worry...you know they do.
Th best thing about this "remake" is that it really has very little in common with it's 1978 cult shocker. The setup is the same, as is the overall story and theme, but the way things go down here is completely fresh and new...and works. I can't recall seeing a remake have anywhere near the balls this does to change things up so radically, all for the better.
This thing is downright brutal, sadistic, and horrific in every way imaginable. It's also one Hell of a ride and I can only wish that every sicko out there who's ever raped someone would get the same thing our heroine deals out. That's what I call justice!
AWESOME FLICK!!!!! I don't think I need to see it again, but the impact from a single viewing is unforgettable.
Interesting review, Jeff. I've heard mixed reviews on this one but would like to check it out anyway. I hear it's extreme and gruesome but also a bitchslap of vengeance to the bad guys.
hey Jeff, are you talking about the remake? you refer to the "2009 remake" but this came out in 2010. im not sure what movie you're referring to. mind sharing a link? thanks man!
I only really enjoyed Sarah's acting. However, I thought this movie was miles better than the original and very impactful. It was too convenient in places thought for me, but overall I liked it.

Personally I prefered the original more noxious than this one. Maybe more naive too or amateur. But the killings were more realistic and less sophisticated. The girl's trauma was deeper and her aftermath craziness more unhealthy.
I didn't think the original was good, certainly not scary--the low production value didn't help--so I never bothered with the remake. After reading here, though, I want to get the DVD. Thx.
Alright. Finally got my DVD in the mail and anxiously watched it. The acting was surprisingly good, but to be honest, it was too derivitive from the original to make me compare it to the original. For one thing, the whole setting was changed from the North to the South so that the filmmakers could (once again) portray rednecks as the baddies...and simpleton, useless baddies at that. Been there, seen that (many times... yawn).
On its own, it has much better production value than the original but lacked the shock value (probably because it came after the Hostel, Saw, and other franchises who beat them to the gore-nography fest). The kills were entertaining (as far as kills can be entertaining), but the whole payoff to the inciting incident just didn't ring true to me. I mean, a simple city girl, though savaged as she was, coming back on the sneak to out-sneak these country boys in brutal paybacks over that much time? I didn't see how she'd have the wits to come up with those scenarios (unless she had a backstory that would allow for her insight into tracking, hunting, and killing), and I don't see how a city girl who's just been that brutalized doesn't just run as far as she can to get the media or State Police to help her (considering local PD was involved in brutalizing her). If the story was set within a 24-hour period or in a setting where it was impossible for her to get to civilization, I could buy it. But as it is currnetly told, I found it fake, though, once again, the acting was excellent, especially for this genre, from all the major actors.
