Well, what can I say? As usual, I'm just completely clueless as to what and why film makers do and don't do what they do and don't do (how's that for a sentence?)
So, in 2008, Quarantine was released on the world, being basically, a shot for shot remake of the Spanish 2007 film, [REC]. Although some thought it was terrible to "ruin" such a great foreign flick by "Hollywoodising" it, many had to agree that it was a pretty decent flick...and I'm one of those. Quarantine was good.
It was also profitable. Made for $12 Million, it grossed $41 Million WW, Not bad at all.
So, then we get a fantastic sequel in [REC]2, which IMO, blew away the original in every way. Word on the street was that a sequel to Quarantine was also in the works. Would it follow along with [REC]2's story? Be another shot for shot American remake?
Well, first of all, it's not a remake in any way. It's not even remotely the same story. It was barely even theatrically released, and was shoe horned together on a puny, pitiful $4 Million budget.
Why would they do this? Why not spend at least as much, knowing you've got a built in audience and you had a nice profit from the first film? As usual, I can't answer the question and I'm completely baffled what anyone was thinking.
This movie is cheaply made and looks it. The "plane" is obviously not a plane, and with only 1 row of seats on 1 side, is obviously not an American commercial airliner, flying out of L.A., to the east coast. Just foolish. Also foolish and cheap is the fact that we don't even see stock footage of a plane flying...all from inside the cockpit, which doesn't look very real.
Lots of leaps in reality on the plane, like live internet feeds on computers and cell phone usage, as they're flying. The plane is tiny, yet it's still less than half full.
It's not a terrible movie, though. There are some creepy scenes and it accomplishes what it's after, but it's such a weak effort that just doesn't make any sense to me.

Biggest problem I have is that they completely changed the tone from the [REC] series. There is no supernatural element here at all. It's some form of man made virus, created to turn its victims into raving "weapons" for armed forces combat, or some such hoke.
Cliched, linear, and predictable, but yet still not a terrible ride, if you go in with low expectations.
Bring on [REC]3!!!! Please!!!
