Really wanted to see this since I first saw a trailer last year. I didn't let the bad word of mouth or poor BO returns cloud my enthusiasm.
Damn, I should have. This movie really sucks the high hard one. Such a waste and disappointment.
It's so dull and slow. So many pathetic talking head scenes with nothing happening, and nothing to look at. Piss poor acting, which was quite a surprise. Terrible dialogue. Senseless plot and foolish Antag reveal.
Seriously, I was fighting off sleep the entire movie. I rolled my eyes numerous times, waiting, hoping something cool wouuld come. When it ended, I sat in the empty theater for a few moments, watchinng the irritating credits sequence, wondering how and why thing got made.
Just all around really bad and completely pointless.
Hope your move went smooth and everything is ship shaping up!!
I would agree with everything you said, except for I didn't hate it. It certainly wasn't great, but it wasn't that horrible either.
Being unfamiliar with Poe, he wasn't required reading in Sweden when I was going to school, I went in cold not knowing at all what to expect.
It must have been fairly boring at times though, because as a horse person, I kept looking at the horses. I noticed something funny, to me at least, they used the same horses over and over in all the scenes. Same carriage horses and drivers no matter what part of town they were in.
House hunting trip is done and successful. I fly back to WI tomorrow morning and pack all my stuff in a big old 26 foot truck and drive cross country again on Friday or Saturday. I'll move into my new place June 1, and start my new job June 4.
Very exciting stuff going on and a brand new phase in my life.
Good. Next time I bet you, you will have the dough to put up!
Yes, James, I will be up and running agian, soon. I was supposed to be in Vegas last weekend, but some unforsenn obsticles arose, and I missed my annual Vegas blowout with college buddies for the 2nd time in 25 years. I'm pissed, but I did what I had to do and negotiated a sweet deal on a beautiful house in Cave Creek, AZ. Wait till the strippers get a peak at it...
I'm starting to think James McTigue, who directed this film, is a one-trick pony. V For Vendetta has grown on me a little, but after Speed Racer and Ninja Assasin..., I woulda thought Raven would help him.
The film may be fictionalized, but holy shit. I don't know if it was in the script by Ben Livingston and Hannah Shakespeare or the director's oversight, but there's a huge red flag when the Detectives deduce the first murder is based off Poe's Murders In The Rue Morgue. I don't know about anyone here, but if you're a writer writing about a writer, fictionalised or not, there's one thing you better not do. Get that author's story wrong.Murders In The Rue Morgue? No kidding? Wasn't some kind of ape involved in that?
The film is mildly watchable thanks to Cusack, but the film winds up being in my view just a costume drama/period piece as window dressing to an average serial killer movie.
Have to say I couldn't get through this one. What bummer for a character like Poe to come off so boilerplate.
Why is it considered just enough to do the novelty mash up? A run of the mill procedural won't do. If anything, you need something exceptional. This film felt uneasy on every level.
I guess I know why they downplayed the V for Vendetta director credit. They didn't want to sully that title with this lukewarm mess.
Staggeringly mediocre execution of a decent premise.

LATEST NEWS CineVita Films is producing a short based on my new feature!
As soon as I found out John Cusack was in this, I said 'No way in hell will I ever see that'. And as many could probably guess, I'm a huge Poe fan.
Now, don't get me wrong. John Cusack's been in some great movies. But let's be honest, he really doesn't have any acting chops. He's just, well, himself, in EVERYTHING he's in.
When I first heard he was in it, I pictured him in silly 1800's garb, holding a phonograph over his head.

I can't really agree with this. IMO, Cusack is a decent to good actor.
He's terrible here, but it's really more the ludicrous script that's to blame. He has so little to do, other than drink and act drunk.
You know, actually, it's quite amazing - I saw this less than 3 months ago, and there's absolutely nothing I can remember about it, other than it sucked.
