I caught this one last night and enjoyed it for what it was. I was brought up on British cop shows so this was always going to appeal to me.
We have Jason Statham playing a thuggish, alcoholic cop who’s known for his aggressive tendencies, we get a glimpse at the beginning when he takes out some hoods.
So there’s a cop killer in town who’s taking down seemingly random cops in sometimes broad daylight and it’s up to Jason to stop this madman. Yep, simple and sweet plot with a side story of a uniform woman officer and her past drug addiction.
The antag Weiss is okay but has no substance/background for me, he’s a maniac with no real reason for killing these cops other than they’ve arrested him the past which to be honest, our police force should have figured out sooner than they did.
Statham was born to play this kind of role because there is no acting involved really. Drink a lot, look tough and have the odd one-liner, it’s his kind of role.
The other talent was good and played their roles well, I liked Paddy Considine in this one playing a gay cop who is hated by most of the force for his sexuality choice although I think this could have been developed more than it was.
If you like British cop shows or you’re a massive Statham fan then your enjoy this. On the other hand if you’re not a fan of either, this one won’t do a lot for you so avoid it.
Found this one endlessly below par, and morally dubious to boot. The film's inability to give Weiss any substance, as Steve notes, makes him completely unthreatening. As we're supposed to be sold on the idea of this one man terrorizing the police, this undoes the film.
Paddy Considine is probably the best part of the film, and, again as Steve notes, should have been used more in terms of his personal life, which was the most interesting part of the whole thing.
