I won't kid you.  This is a very strange movie chock full of surprises.

A street drug named Soy Sauce lets you see the future.  Alive white fuzz that wants to take over the world.  A phantom hand that can open other dimensions.  And two young men that get stuck smack in the middle of the mayhem.

It was a bit on the dark side but I loved it.  It was kind of a mix between Johnny Darko, Naked Lunch and Reanimator with a bit of David Lynch thrown in for good luck.   If you like any of the above movies - you will definitely like this one.

The only thing I might say critically about this film is that the end is a bit of a disappointment.   Otherwise, see it.

Yeah, the ending was disappointing...

But besides that, I actually liked this a lot. It kind of got lost on itself and some parts, I had no clue what was going on but it was just so stupidly fun that you couldn't hate it.

It also has a few memorable scenes, when Dave takes Giamatti to his truck, some good stuff there.

I might put this in my top 10 films for 2012 but I've still get a few more to watch.

Man, now I feel even worse after reading these comments.
I tried to watch it three times, but kept losing interest.

Despite Giamatti's presensce, I felt the whole thing was too kitchen sink.
If it takes fives movies to tell what one newer movie is like, it's likely too much.

I like some of the clever effects and tone.
But I wanted something more to bring it together for me.

Saying that though, I hope this hits for Coscarelli.
I'm a big Bubba-Ho-Tep fan and I want this guy to keep making movies.

Bubba Ho-Tep and/or Phantasm it ain't, but this is a great one for a lazy Friday night with some friends and beers. Thumbs up from me for a silly good time.

I liked this one a lot. One of my favorites of last year. I'm with everyone else on the ending but other than that, it totally delivered on the trailer and proved, once again, that Coscarelli is one of the few horror legends that's managed to keep it up over his many years in the biz. Not to say this holds a candle to Phantasm or Bubba Ho-tep but despite its rough edges, it held my attention from start to finish and managed the rare feet of being simultaneously fresh and nostalgic. This and Excision, while both imperfect films, offer forth a strong hint that the horror genre might have some bite in it yet.

I'm super interested in seeing this one.
It looks kinda stupid, but definitely fun.

I've wanted to see this one since I saw the trailers for it (haven't yet.)  It immediately reminded me of Naked Lunch, with "Return of the Alien's Deadly Spawn" FX.  Hope it'll live up to my expectations...  (And I'm a fan of Bubba Ho Tep, too.)

Okay - just saw John Dies at the End.

Got to admit, I enjoyed it...and it had some great set pieces.  (The meat monster, for instance.)

But things DID completely fall apart at the end.

And the story - though purposely surreal - still would have been more satisfying if it had been more internally coherent.  I can't help but think that if the script had gone through a few more drafts, this one COULD have been a classic for all ages!  Kind of like the original MIB, but for fans of Naked Lunch.

Which it wasn't.  It was just fun and different. Granted, I haven't read the book, so I don't know if it was a good adaptation, or not...

Darn it!
