How could this be the 5th in the RE installment already?  Damn...I remember so well seeing the first one in the theater and being relatively pleased back in 2002...2002?  For reals?  Damn...

Well, since the original, as far as I'm concerned, this series has gone to shit and pretty much each installment has been worse than the prior...or somewhere close to that, at least, culminating in part 4 - "Afterlife" which sucked major ass.

I was expecting to hate this last one as well, but you know what?  I didn't hate it.

Let's be clear that this is not a "good movie" by any means.  It's ridiculous, it's almost impossible to follow, the acting is terrible at times, and the action is so stylized that I actually had to laugh a few times.  The dialogue, or what little there is, is poor to terrible, but this isn't a franchise that anyone is going to be listening for stellar dialogue.  What this really feels like is playing or watching a video game, and since it's based on a video game, maybe this is a compliment?  Not sure exactly.

But compared to Afterlife?     Night and day...night and day, at least for me.

This thing moves so fast from one action set piece to another, if you blink a few times, you may not know where you are any longer.  But, on the opposite end of that same spectrum, each one of these set piece scenes is the same thing - lots of shooting with guns that never run out of ammo, lots of slow motion effects, and little in the way of actual story telling.  So, I guess it doesn't matter if you blink or not - you may still have no clue where you are or why you're there.

The "intro" is about 25 minutes, I think, and that's just a little less than 1/3 of the entire film.  By the time our ticking clock has ticked down close to zero, you'll probably have to check your real clock, because this thing flies by.

The finale here begs for commentary, because it's laugh out loud ridiculous, but somehow kind of works for me.  It's a double fight scene that takes place on the ice and snow pack of Russia.  Alice fights Jill while Rain fights 2 dudes who I can't remember their names.  The scene must run at least 8 or 9 minutes and it's literally nothing but fighting over and over.  It's quite funny and I had to check the running time, several times, because I just couldn't believe how .long this frickin' scene was.

Oh Hell...I got through it and was left thinking for some really strange reason, i didn't hate it.  Part 6 is coming up next and based on international returns, the end is nowhere in sight.

The Resident Evil series is garbage, sorry Jeff.

The first one sucked too.  It was complete ass.

Really disappointed with the route they went.

Romero's script wasn't Gone With The Wind, but at least it had Chris, Barry, Jill, Wesker.  Some familiar names - which I think is what all of the fans of the games were expecting.

I'll give the series credit, though - when they intro the game's characters, the actors actually look the part.

The RE animated films are more entertaining in my eyes.
I did like one action sequence in Retribution, stuck somewhere in the middle.
But other than that, it is indeed the best RE since the first one. That's also not high praise coming from me. In fact, I thought this was one of the worst films last year.

That opening sequence...hey lookie kids...it's a 3D gag we want to show off! The scene is in reverse and foward again! Ten minutes off your biological clock for no reason!

It's a good thing folks have played the games and/or followed the movie news regarding this flick because otherwise, with the exception of the "cloned" characters you would have no freaking idea who the new characters are or much less care.

And y'know they aren't done yet...
