I am very happy to be able to write a positive review for a change.  Shocking as it may sound, this is a great movie that works on many different levels, but most importantly, it just works.

Performances are all top notch.  Dialogue is great and very believable.  Action is well done except for a few freeze frames during violent parts, which I personally don't like.  Best of all, tension runs high and doesn't let up, which isn't easy to pull off.

As I often say, I can tell within mere seconds if a movie is going to blow or have a chance at being good.  I knew immediately this had a shot, and it delivered throughout.

I wasn't very impressed with Halle's hair or wig or whatever the Hell it was, but believe it or not, that's my biggest complaint.  The ending may be a bit over the top and unrealistic, but somehow, it actually works within the context of what has taken place.

It's nice to see Halle back on screen.  It's also nice to see a "little" $13 Million production look so good and work so effectively on the big screen, competing with films that cost 10 and 20 times more.

This a great little thriller that will keep you engaged and concerned for the Protags here.  2 thumbs up!

Jeff,

Just double checking and making sure this is an honest review. If it is, great. I've seen stranger things happen.

Well, in that case, good times. Could've fooled me from the trailer, but that wouldn't be the first bad trailer ever. I remember how bad "Safe" looked last year, but I enjoyed it as a fun, over-stylized action movie.

I'm sure everyone won't agree with me, but as far as I'm concerned, it's better than 95% of the movies out there.

It also performed very well opening weekend and will go on to make $40+ Million on a $13 Million budget.

Going to see this hopefully this weekend. Looks pretty good and I am a fan of Anderson's previous work (Session 9, Transsiberian, The Machinist).

Also feel obligued as one of my friends is in it!

So I gotta go and support his work!!

This is probably why you dislike so many movies! Self-fulfilling prophecy more likely than incredibly discerning!

I wish that were the case, Andrew.  I don't like not liking or hating movies.  I honestly don't.

And understand that when I say "I can tell within seconds", I mean I can tell if the movie is going to suck.  A movie can always start off OK and look "good", but that doesn't mean it's going to be able to hold up.

Ahhh, fair enough. Only teasing. A friend of mine makes lightning decisions based on the titles - but this is more low budget/short films, 'cos his theory goes that if they can't be bothered to get the titles looking good, what's the rest of it gonna look like.

Excellent. Totally excellent. Tight, simple, thrilling, and hits that perfect balance where the plot is larger than life but still feels plausible. Strong acting, assured direction, and a surprisingly charming streak of nastiness.

On a minor note, it was also pleasant to see a flick with many central black characters that didn't at all feel like they were written "black".

I was a little skeptical to see The Call when it came out in the theaters because it looked like it would be a flop but hearing the good reviews from you guys I'll definitely get around to watching it this week.

Wasn't sure what to expect when I saw this, but loved it!

In saying that, everything worked in great except one thing for me which really p**sed me off cause I enjoyed everything else, even the ending I thought was great.

--SPOILER--

When Halle drives to the house and finds the hide out - WTF - What the hell were the police doing while they were there? Didn't they search the area for evidence or collect anything they may have found. Would some police still be there in case he came back or were they trying to make a blatent point of irresponsibility of police these days and that they wouldn't do there job properly?

Might be just IMO, but it would have been more believable if she had have driven to the house and been turned away by police then if she had have driven down the road and stopped, upset, gotten out of the car and heard the noise in a feild nearby and then found the hideout. A little tweak like that would have worked much better, IMO.

Sorry, just ranting cause, as I said, I really enjoyed the rest and really got into it, but this bit took me from the film and got me thinking. Grrrrrrrr! I hate it when that happens in a really good film.

I agree with you on the ending bflywings. The movie itself was great but I was thinking the same thing when Halle found the hideout hidden under the flag pole. So what, police only check the house but don't venture out fifty feet to search the grounds? Regardless it was really good.
