I've read alot of peep's posts about this being 1 of their favorite flicks of 2012 but don't see an actual thread for it...so I thought I'd throw 1 up.

I've seen the budget listed at both $35 Million and $50 Million - not sure which is correct, but either way, this thing was a bomb with only $13 Million here in the states and another $22 Million overseas.  Critics and fans that saw it seem to really dig it, though.

I'm not a comic guy, nor was I familiar with Judge Dredd, other than the 95 bomb with old Sly Stallone.  I think that's most likely why both features were unsuccessful - peeps just didn't know much about the subject matter.

Another big issue for me was the fact that Dredd never once took his helmet off, making him come across as less of a real character I could care about.  I've done some research and understand that Dredd never takes his helmet off in the comics, and applaud the effort to stay true to the source material, but for the casual movie goer, I see it as a big problem.

The movie was "cool" and I bet it looked great in the theater.  The violence was wicked and I always applaud that, but for me, this came off rather dull and by the numbers.  I know Dredd is a British creation and was modeled somewhat off Clint Eastwood's Dirty Harry, and this definitely had that feel - that exact same feel, from "The Enforcer", all the way down to a female rookie being the 2nd fiddle.

I guess it was just too contained for me, almost like a video game where your goal is to get through throngs of bad guys, as you ascend a tower of sorts to get to the final boss.

Definitely not a crapfest, and well put together, and beautifully shot, but aside from a few memorable visual kills, nothing here to really keep my interest or get me too excited.

Ha ha,

Loved the fact he never took his helmet off. and that he never changes character. I don't always need to get under the skin of my protag. Love the idea that some people may just be bad azz enough to not give a fuck about anything but justice. HE's like a robot with a little sense of humor.

Thought it rocked. Rented it twice. Second time to try out new 3d glasses. What a waist. Sad to see it fail at the box office so badly. I still can't get the taste of Stallone playing Dredd out of my mouth. That film was just awful front to back.

Yes, Dredd was much better thasn the Danny Cannon directed film from the mid 90s. The odd thing about the 95 film is that Dredd, in that film, was played by Stallone who made sure for most of the film, he had his helmet off. The film bombed, but I wonder to this day if that more had to do with the casting of  Rob Schneider as his sidekick/comic relief.

I think the new film had something else stacked against it. Two things.  One is the 3D element - which to be fair, was used rather well. The other was, of course, the co-incidence that earlier last year there was an action film import, Raid Redemption, which I liked a little bit but thought it was hugely overrated.

This movie was made for one reason = to entertain. This is probably not the movie for delicate shades, nor for deep dialogue of the highest format. But really god sci-fi action operated with a "minimal" budget.

Funny to think that Disney produced the stallone version, maybe that's why the cartoonish Rob Schneider was cast as sidekick/comic relief. Kinda crazy to think that Robocop sprung out of the Dredd drafts back in in the 80's.

They had some really neat effects which I like in the 3D element. Especially cool is the visualization of the narcotic drug, slo-mo, which makes the human brain experience reality in 1% speed.

If you've already seen the Indonesian film The Raid: Redemption, you might believe that Dredd is a shameless copy. The action is in fact more or less the same, but Dredd was actually recorded first. Overall good sci-fi B movie.

The slo-mo drug was a weak point for me. Would actually make the villains senses more heightened. Imagine if you could slowly watch the bullets come toward you. You may actually be able to dodge one. I don't find that concept base in the reality of drug use. Super cool concept, just didn't work for me
