You've all heard this fiasco, so no reason to give any backstory or box office info...but is it really as bad as everyone said it was?
I had to find out, so I watched it last week on Blu Ray from Netflix. For some reason, I didn't even realize that M. Night Shyamalan directed and co-wrote this.
Oh God...yeah, it's really bad. It even sucks. It's not good in any way. It's so dull, so generic, so cliche, and worst of all, so damn predictable. It honestly comes off like a 1990's video game where a character has to get from point A to point B and achieve some mission, complete with a set amount of "things" to help get him there successfully.
For a big budget, $130 Million, Summer tent pole flcik, this thing just reaked of cheese and cheap. FX were very poor, IMO, and there were obvious choices to not even show several big ticket events, like the crash of the ship early on. Just downright weak.
On top of all the negatives already laid out, this was so completely unbelievable, corny, immature, and poorly thought out. THey were very, very lucky to pull in $243 Million WW.
It wasn't great or even worth it's budget. But ya know what, it was pretty damn harmless entertainment. If M. Night and the Smith's weren't attached, I truly believe this would have been better received.

What up, Zack? Are there any movies you don't like? It seriously sounds like everythgin you see, you enjoy. And there's absolutely nothing wrong with that, if that's the way you are, either.
I'm just a glass half full kinda guy I guess. I HATED Uwe Boll's Seed, which was offensive. Hmm... Other movies I didn't like... I'll have to get back to you on that one. Lol.

Picked it up at my local library. I, too, was curious. I noted in another thread you asked where the budget of Pacific Rim went. I could tell it all went into the FX and production design. But After Earth is another thing.
130 million--for this?
The CGI creatures were sloppy, although I kind of felt sorry for the big bird. That bird had more chrisma than the two leads. I commend M. Night and the Smiths (who came up with the story and also were co-producers) for taking a roll of the dice and show us how people speak in the future. A gamble that didn't really pay off. Yeah, the little flashbacks where one thinks of family where everyone calls you Sir. and salutes you at the dinner table.
I can see why this film flopped and was overall despised. Jayden Smith's character was okay, but the young actor could not carry this picture. Dad Will is more or less in one location and can barely move out of the chair.
A lot of this film was confusing in the narrative. To jump or not to jump. But our hero has got some gadget in his suit that helps him glide with additional aid from visual effects. The bird you care about for being dumb; it thought our hero fell from the nest and acted as if he just hatched from the egg. That's right Jayden Smith looks like a bird! You couldn't tell? You didn't see the resemblance?
They said the animals evolved to kill mankind after mankind has left the planet. Yet a sudden ice age in the middle of a jungle will kill you faster. I got to thinking--okay! I get it! The animals are pissed at us because we left them to fend for themselves in this horrible enviornment! I'd hate you too. Unless you looked like a bird.
Quick. We need a plot point that the crew would bring a dangerous creature on board - a species who has slaughtered thousands of human beings and said alien species we are at war with. It tracks you by knowing your fear. If I understand the voice over from the start of the film correctly, those alien bug-things had already been dropped off on Earth. It would also make sense if they became the ultimate Preadator, Some humans are trained to have no fear and few other emotions and turn the tide of the battle by simply walking up and slicing them up. Right? So why is this thing alive, locked up and on board? Where did it come from? It wasn't the same one who killed the sister. That was years ago, according to the flashback. YES the creature did not sense our young hero's fear because he was in some kind of container that should have been mass produced so EVERYONE can have one! Even if it is cramped.
"You should come back to the ship" (and watch me slowly DIE!) " But I come this far, SIR" (and have to face those ugly CG wolves again) " That's an ORDER, cadet!" (and since I'm dead., guess who DIES next? You do!) " I can do this SIR" ( because if I go back, I'd get lost ) "Noooooo!" (you are wearing your little bird winged suit that I had you put on, right?) "Geronimo!" (I trickedd the audience into thinking I was really in danger!)
**Okay, he didn't actually say Geronimo, but he may as well have; he wouldn't get mistaken for a bird
M. Night was overrated to begin with. I personally think he hit his peak with Signs but perhaps the director has a shot at making a comeback. I suggest a film noir thriller. Or a heist movie. Or a combination thereof.
Will Smith has done better. We know that. Jayden's done better - in the Karate Kid remake from a few years back.
I think the story was there at one point. I think the execution was horrible. I would have, if it were me, found a way, to get Will Smith/ Cypher out of his chair and the father & son BOND as they share the adventure. Son Cadet could still save the day and his Dad SIR.
Sorry.... I just saw this thread and...I don't know what came over me. Yeah, the bird was fine.
Not to ruffle feathers here, but of course Will Smith is gonna pass on Django if his pretentious son has a chance to co-star with him. He was clearly thinking more about how him and his son were gonna come off from the film, rather than how the film's gonna come off.
It's good to watch with your teen children to bond with as you b!th and gripe at all the stupid things the father and son do and fail to do layered with dysfunction.
My personal favourite, ""It's Your Birthday" Mateo Said. I Didn't Respond. "Are You Not Excited To Be 15" He Asked. Reading My Book I Uttered "I Turned 15 Long Ago"" Reading his book, classy. Maybe it's not as bad as the Amanda Bynes and Lindsay Lohan cases but wow...
