Can anyone explain to me why Godzilla was fighting on our side? They didn't explore or explain his motivation at all. I realize that's a bit of an odd thing to say about a monster, but we need to know why he's doing what he's doing..
It was explained with pretty much one line of dialogue (paraphrasing): "Godzilla is here to restore balance to nature."
Yeah I heard that too. It's simply not enough. Honestly, I think they should have just stuck with Godzilla. Or at least had one battle mid movie with the humans vs godzilla.
Speaking of action, I was really disappointed that most of the action was recapped on tv or in the background. The only fight they actually showed was the one at the end. So frustrating.
You ain't kidding. It was very frustrating. I got tired of all the cutting away. Godzilla has such a cool intro too, and we cut away from the rest of the fight just to see it on a TV for 4 seconds. I heard a lot of talk that the director tried to do the Spielberg/Jaws approach, but IMO, he just ruined everything. Like someone else said, Godzilla was a minor character in his own film, and it didn't help either that his sole reason for being in the movie felt forced. I can only imagine what his screen time will be like in the sequels that were green lit. I would pass on the upcoming movies, but now that I just got hired at AMC, I can see it for free, so what the hell I'll check 'em out anyway. No money out of my pocket.
Damn...I'm shocked, as I really thought this would be at least decent, and maybe even good. I know most despised the 1998 remake, but I didn't think it was all that bad, really. This one? I thought it was pretty bad in just about all ways.
Let's start with a few things everyone involved really got wrong...and completely irked me!
Bryan Cranston - OK, I get it...everyone seems to love the guy, but c'mon now...he's 58 years old, for God's sake and that wig he was wearing was pathetic! Seriously, I couldn't stop staring at that thing...in 3D! It seemed to get even worse when he showed up 15 years later, as in it seemed like they tried to make him look even younger.
But, even without the ridiculous toup, he's just too old to play the role he played here. Just foolish, IMO.
So, then we get our lead Protag in Aaron Taylor Johnson, who's 23 in real life, playing a guy who's...hmmm...not sure how old he's supposed to be, but it's doubtful he's anywhere near 23. And he's married to Elizabeth Olson, who's actually 25, and some kind of nurse and they have a young son, live in downtown San Francisco in a pretty decent place - NOT!!!!! Trust me, I've lived in SF and these 2 would be living in a much less nice place...MUCH LESS NICE!!!
For me, everything started out on the wrong foot, even though I did enjoy the slow mysterious setup. From there, I could go on and on, but I won't.
As others have correctly said, Godzilla was barely in this and the fact that he's some kind of protector of nature and mankind is just ludicrous! Ridiculous! Really? He doesn't kill anyone! He doesn't destroy anything, except when he's fighting or trying to get to the fight.
The Mutos were a poor choice any way you look at it. The design was not great by any means, but IMO, Zilla would totally crush these bugs without much of a fight, and that's a big problem in itself.
The human story here was so lacking. I didn't care about anyone and I knew damn well everyone would live any way. Hell, almost everyone lived!
Did I hate this completely? No, I didn't, but I'm shocked that the collective "genius" of all involved couldn't come up with a better storyline to the point that it really makes me wonder what the fuck is going on in TinselTown.
Some cool scenes. Some potentail cool scenes. Some destruction and chaos, and that's about it.
Don't see it in imax 3d, from what I heard it was shot in 2d or whatever, and you would just be wasting your money. Nothing stood out anyway except maybe Godzilla's loud, thunderous roar.
Yeah, but note those hairstyles aren't what he had in Zilla.
And, I don't know how new or old those pics are.
He definitely was wearing a bad toup. Many actors wear wigs in flicks and that's not the big issue - he's just too old to be playing the role he played here, IMO - and it really showed.
I thought he looked fine aside from the fact that he looked like he ran with a stick up his ass.
In Heat, Pacino was 55 years old and he could haul ass without breakin a sweat.
But, how old was Pacino's character supposed to be in Heat?
And, BTW, Pacino is the king of the toups! I've cracked up for hours, says, and literally foever, thinking about those heinous toups he wears.
Trust me, bro, Cranston was rocking a bad wig throughout ZillaGod. In 3D, it was so obvious, I swear I had to hold in a laugh when they showed a close up of his hairline.
Funny aside for yous'all...my company hired a this new guy in Spetember and I knew him...or of him, but when he showed up, he looked "different". When I flew out to meet and greet, my boss told me to meet up with teh new guy at baggage claim and he'd pick us up. I asked what does he look like, to make sure, as I hadn't seen him in years. My boss said, he's got a black wig, or a really bad weave. When I saw that person outside, I knew it was him. Fucking hilarious!!!
But, how old was Pacino's character supposed to be in Heat?
I don't know - you could probably say 30's or 40's, because he really doesn't look his age - but regardless, he was still 55 years old at the time. Your comments about Cranston being old and close to his 60's made me think about Pacino, also close to his 60's in Heat, and how Pacino, despite his age, ran like an Olympic track star in some sequences. If you watch Cranston run in Godzilla, it looks like he has something lodged up his ass. IMO, Cranston also doesn't look his age in Godzilla, but when that scene comes around where he has to run - you can tell he runs like an old man.
I thought it was fine until Godzilla showed up, it went down hill from there.
The main actor was fine but he doesn't have enough charisma to be in that role. His storyline reminded me of Will Smith in Independence day.
Godzilla wasn't made out to be a big deal in this movie. More time was focused on the other creatures. I found the end to be silly, with the caption on TV.
I liked the 1998 version better, while not great it was more entertaining than this.
