For many, GotG was the most anticipated film of the Summer (myself included). And I'm proud to announce that Guardians does not disappoint. Not only is this my favorite movie of the Summer, but it's also my favorite Marvel movie...ever.

I'm not going to go into the plot or story. Long story short, several "a-holes" join forces to  stop a zealot named Ronan who is hell bent on destroying an entire race (with the help of an infinity gem). That's all I'm going to say about the story because it's best to go into this one knowing nothing, assuming that you haven't read the comics obviously.

And that's what I love best about Guardians, it doesn't explain anything. It drops you into the middle of the comic's world and doesn't hold your hand. Sure, there's some exposition about the gem and it's power, but the aliens, weapons, and planets are just...there. This film holds your attention because there's so much mystery. It builds intrigue by showing you what this universe contains, but doesn't walk you through it. It's a great example of  the old mantra, "show, don't tell."

Furthermore, this film feels like a sci-fi film made in the 70's and 80's. Heck, even the sound track reflects this (side note, the sound track is INCREDIBLE). This is Marvel's Star Wars. From the character design to the weaponry, everything is so lovingly crafted.

Which brings me to my next point, James Gunn. I f ucking love this man. From his days at Troma to Slither, I am fascinated by everything he touches. He was the perfect director for a movie like this and he doesn't forget his roots. Rob Zombie, Lloyd Kaufman, and Nathan Fillion all have cameos in this film. Heck, even Gunn's dog is in the movie. The subject matter pairs perfectly with Gunn, even more so than the Avengers and Joss Whedon.

But let's talk more about the movie itself. The dialogue is snappy, the camera work is near perfect, and the CGI is jaw dropping. You forget that Groot and Rocket aren't real.

As for the acting, all of Gunn's risks paid off. No one expected Chris Pratt to be a leading man actor, but he's exceptional. In fact, all of the actors are down right phenomenal in this movie. I honestly can't say which one is better. However, Dave Batista might be the biggest surprise of the film. He's incredible and way better than let's say, the Rock. His past might be rooted in the WWE, but his future is in feature films.

Obviously Rocket the Raccoon nearly steals the show. He's sarcastic, gritty, and hilarious. I'd give my left nut for a spin off film. No joke.

Now Guardians of the Galaxy isn't a perfect film. And most of the problems stem from making Guardians a part of a bigger story line. Frankly, this s hit annoys me. We're 7 Marvel movies in and Thanos hasn't collected even one god damn infinity gem. But I digress. Ronan probably isn't the most developed villain to grace the big screen, nor is Nebula and her relationship with her sister. But these are minor complaints. I wasn't a huge fan of Loki and I never felt like he was much of a threat. But Ronan's a f ucking bad ass in this film and a force to be reckoned with.

Overall Guardians of the Galaxy is weird, witty, and well crafted. This movie was made out of love and not out of obligation (looking at you Amazing Spiderman). Go see this film ASAP so that the studios will green light Gunn's other pet projects. Oh and see it in IMAX 3D. This is not only the best movie of the Summer, but one of the most unique films I've seen in years.

A- for me.

PS. For the love of god, don't leave the theater until after the credits are over. I still can't believe what I saw....

I have to say I have had no desire to see this as I am a bit burnt out by super hero movies at the moment but all the great reviews are making me put this back on my list to watch. Literally no one I know who has seen this has had a bad thing to say about it.

On top of that I am also a fan of James Gunn. Slither is very underrated.

If you're burnt out on super hero films, then this is the PERFECT movie for you. It's quirky, different, and James Gunn's personality is deeply embedded into the film.

Oh and there's a Slither worm in The Collector's, eh, collection.

Just home from seeing this at the drive in with the family.

It was pretty good. Kids liked it. As I said on another thread once before, I hadn't been to the cinema since 2008 to see a non kids film. I really couldn't be bothered anymore.

Albino's review was pretty spot on. It was well made, the effects were cool, the dialogue snappy. But in the end, to me, it's just another movie that comes out, makes heaps of money and that's it.  I'll continue to write my own screenplays of stuff that I'd like to see at the flicks.

Prolly be another 6 years before I go again. To be fair, this woulda been better seeing it in the cinema.

I'm not sure I'd last six weeks myself, Stevie.

You really must hide that Xbox controller to get yerself out there.

Films, certain ones, are always better with a crowd. Albeit there's only Nolan, Fincher and Tarantino who will definitely get me in there, I'm certainly going to see Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes on a big screen. Not in 3D though. I'm not playing. I think it's gimmicky wank.

I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I don't know how old your kids are. Regardless I think Finding Nemo 2 is out soon. That'll be good. Even for the likes of me.

Okay - REALLY short commentary on Guardians, which we saw last week, just to get in my five cents.  Disclaimer: I'm not a huge superhero fan.  Dark graphic novels like Vendetta and Hellblazer, yes.  Hard core science fiction, yes.  Guys in tights?  No.

And there *were* things in Guardians that left me very flat.  The bad guys were, IMHO, cheesy (and there were too many of them.)  The "adopted sister" rivalries were cliche. And all the impending doom scenarios sorta made me yawn.

THAT said, there were some great comedic lines in it.  (You've got to be kidding.  No, I think they do like you. And: I don't think it's possible to be a 100% dick...)  And ROCKET WAS AWESOME.  Both his character and the FX made the film.  He was everything a Han Solo character needs to be, and fresh enough that it wasn't stale.  The line he gave about not having asked to be experimented on even made me honestly sympathetic to the character.  LOVED Rocket.  And Groot's expressions were pretty cool, too.  The other characters?  Meh....

Good, light entertainment.

Surprisingly funny, great visuals.

Too light-hearted to be a great film, but it's a fun ride. Well worth the watch.

Having worked on this one, I'm in a decent position to offer answers on any questions people may have about it.

It's really interesting to see the reaction, and it justifies the huge number of hours that a huge number of people put into this film.

That makes me sound like a naughty boy!

I worked in 'production', which is basically at the hub of any film.

The biggest lesson was how much input you see from the departments, so you'd see pre-vis on scenes that would allow JG to plot out an action scene, for example. The VFX team on this movie was absolutely huge. Some great sets were built, but there was some great green screening going on, and being largely a studio-based (as opposed to location) shoot, it's truly inspiring to see how the many talented members of the crew bring movies like this to life. It's truly a collaborative effort.

From a writing perspective, that's an invaluable education, to see how the departments bring their ideas, creativity and suggestions to really flesh a film out.

Good on you! I've worked on small things in Oz but nothing big like this. Must have been a real education, not to mention exciting.

I wouldn't like to think what Andrew has been up to with his dangler... but I will be going to see this one soon with the kids. Probably be in 3D. The kids like it.

Andrew, is this you?

Yeah, real education, and it's something I would recommend to anyone who wants to get writing full-time. Get on to film sets as much as possible.

If I could get full-time work out in Sydney, I'd abandon London quicker than you can say London! Britain is such a strong destination at the minute because of the tax situation and Shepperton, Pinewood and Leavesden Studios are all full of massive Hollywood productions.

Yeah, that's me, Dustin. The Producer category is the one I will be wanting to flesh out these next few years. I have learnt what that means for the social life, though! But then I watch a trailer for something like Nightcrawler and think, damn, that's the kind of films I want to make. Lots of talented writers here - I would love to get a Simply Scripts feature out there at some point in the future.

Shame about the Hooligan Factory not being able to hold a spot at the cinema. I was looking forward to seeing it, but it barely had a run. They should support British film more, which translates to spending more money on promotion.

I can buy the DVD, or rent it on VOD I suppose, but it's not the same.

Well done for getting a credit on such a huge film... and yeah, I agree with you, we all, as writers, should seek to get on as many sets as possible. Not only for the experience but also for the all important contacts.
