Best film ever made? Discuss.

(I know most people will laugh at the idea, but I re-watched it for surely the dozenth time the other night and was struck once again by just how much is going on in there.)

I chose not to write a dissertation at university - I knew I didn't have the self-discipline to do it properly - but if I had, it would have been on this film.

'This is one time where television really fails to capture the true excitement of a large squirrel predicting the weather.'

Guess who's back? Back again?

I'll bite. Why is Groundhog Day the best film ever made?

What good are choices if they're all bad?

Yeah, I don't see it even approaching that level. And, really, it falls off a lot in the last act and loses so much of what made it clever. Not to say it was bad, but it became more run-of-the-mill, I thought.

Lots of people have written on variations of this: https://philosophynow.org/issues/93/Groundhog_Day

...though most tend to focus just on Nietzsche and eternal recurrence, which, as mentioned in that article, is probably a little off. People also write about Camus and The Myth of Sispyhus. So people definitely agree with you, Jonny!

Though supporting that kind of analysis doesn't make it a great movie, of course. But, I'd definitely call it a great movie! It's a mainstream comedy that's thought-provoking, funny, and smart, which is pretty darn impressive.

It's a fine movie. I liked it more as a kid. Seemed more fantastic.

Watched it a few years back. Wasn't as impressed. Still good.
