worth seeing but not nearly as good as the acclaim.
I too don't understand why people are losing their minds over this film.
It was Okay. Clunky, felt disjointed in structure. Some of the musical scenes felt like they were added just so there would be a musical segment in that portion of the film. Guess what I'm trying to say is that the movie didn't flow well for me, which I think is key in this genre, to naturally transition from one musical number to another while maintaining a good grip on the story.
Wasn't a big fan of Whiplash, but that was a better movie than this.
I hate musicals, I hate the golden age of Hollywood, and I really hate movies that inspire struggling artists...but god damn, did I love this film. There hasn't been anything like it in years. La La Land is the reason we go to movies and the reason we create movies.
Granted, this film is incredibly masturbatory. And if there's one thing I've learned from living in LA, is that LA-ites love it when people pander to them. But honestly, the movie is so good that it transcends all of that (and it also mocks LA while simultaneously celebrating the city).
Since it's winning all of these awards, there's going to be a ton of backlash. It's a double edged sword really. But whatever, I guess it's cool to hate things that are genuinely good and original these days.
See it in the theater for the experience. It was my second favorite film of 2016 behind The Witch.
I liked this movie a lot, loved the subtlety and music. And the structure is that of the golden age movies - jumping from one big event to the other in their lives without much explanation.
My daughter liked it even more - she cried a lot for two days straight. That's when I understood how powerful a movie can be. She's a crier, but hasn't cried that much even when she saw Titanic.
