Thought someone should give a shoutout to this low-budget hit. I caught a late show the Friday it opened and had a blast. Audience screamed, laughed, and went quiet at all the right times.

Fantastic entertainment and a coherent political provocation -- two things that are often at odds.

Great cast, tight script, sense of fun, sense of terror. No mystery why this one's a success.

The film also sits at 99% on Rotten Tomatoes with one negative review out of 178 -- another victim of contrarian rascal Armond White. Thank god for him.

Good shit. It took a little blow from the hype for me, but these days, hype is so widespread and disproportionate, it's only natural that'd be the case. I thought the ending was a little anti-climactic, even though the reveal/"twist was solid, and some of the horror elements were a little overblown, but generally I was pleased. Always had a feeling the Key & Peele dudes were secretly brilliant storytellers and character actors beyond the genuinely funny but more or less light slapstick fare. This isn't the first thing to confirm that feeling (Fargo was), but it's definitely a deeper glimpse into just how far their talent extends.

Normally, I wouldn't think much of this, but reading his review, I definitely had to look more into this guy. Indeed, he seems to be a controversial figure in film criticism, and I can understand why. His reviews for this and Moonlight in particular left a bad taste in my mouth, even though I wasn't so into either film that I would necessarily resent pushback. I think in 2017, you can't make a film that has anything to do with race, even tangentially, and not expect to have some hearty political overtones in the response, but White's reviews felt like a resentful airing of grievances based on what the films supposedly represent, as if he were prepared to hate them no matter what. Fair game, and for sure, nobody *has* to like any given film (Moonlight in particular probably isn't gonna have people rushing back to the theater for a second viewing), but man... definitely an in-your-face voice, this guy.

Movie was Okay.

I have to think that the hype for this has something to do with the race of the writer-director and the subject matter, and the fact that people did not want to give it fair criticism because it's a sensitive time right now in the US.

The movie is not deserving of 99% of RT and 8+ on IMDB in comparison to other movies that are rated lower, IMO.

I really like Key and Peele and while I thought the movie was solid, I did not think it was great or worthy of the praise that it got.

Saw this today.  I was a little leery because of both the hype and the fact that in some circles, this is being billed as a horror comedy.

First the great news - this ain't no comedy, as far as I'm concerned.  Are there funny moments?  Yep..quite a few, actually.  Is there satire running thick?  Yep, for sure.  But comedy?  No...I don't think so at all.

Now onto the hype part.  Absolutely chocking how well reviewed this movie is and how much money it's already made and continues to make.  Seriously, SHOCKING!  But, it does not live up to that hype at all, IMO, and I also have to agree with alot of IMDB reviews pointing out how racist the film is, and how that most likely plays into the near 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating - as in, any "white" critic who bashes the film, will be viewed as racist himself, most likely.

OK, don't get me wrong, I actually liked the flick quite a bit, as it was creepy and eerie early on and our 2 leads here, Daniel Kaluuya and Allison Williams, did such a great job, had real chemistry, and just came off as such nice peeps, that I bought in, completely.

The problems spring up in several areas...

First of all, it was so apparent that literally every white character was "bad", that I actually was waiting for some kind of complete opposite twist.  It was also so apparent that every black character at the Armitage household was seriously fucked up on something, that again, I was waiting for some kind of crazy twist.

Neither twist ever came, though, making the finale come off rather anti climatic...but then again, there were some surprises that were well handled, which I won't spoil.

Secondly, the real plot of the film, which, again, I won't spoil, makes absolutely ZERO sense when you think about it for just a few seconds.  Literally mind mindbogglingly dumb!  Wish I could expand on this, but I don't want to give anything away.

It's very interesting how this movie has performed, in that it's an R rated "horror" movie with very little violence, no real gore to speak of, no sex, and no nudity.  Lots of swearing and the like, a premise that oozes R rating, but none of the stuff one expects in an R rated horror movie.

I doubt there's much replay value here, but I was entertained throughout, even though I felt a little letdown afterwards.

Saw this tonight.

I'm with the "It was OK" camp.

The first half was very good. Expertly directed and written, with a seriously tense and mysterious undertone.

Then it went silly.

I'm kind of used to the idea now that if the mainstream thinks a horror movie is good, then it will probably be too tame for me. Horror, for me, is a genre of extremes. It's about taking ideas to their darkest, most stark and brutal points and this was too middle of the road.

There was the core of a really interesting idea here, white people living in black people's heads, a kind of cultural slavery, but it was largely lost amongst the absurdity of the second half and a sort of too obvious, casual "reverse-racism".

I enjoyed it. I was fun. The rating is a little insulting to better horror films, though, in my opinion. Racism is scary, but this film isn't and it almost makes racism seem silly. Overall, it kind of failed as a horror film and failed as a social commentary for me. Good attempt, however.

I got a chance to watch this movie for a second time a week back. It was a free screening. So, I took it. I thought - "I still don't get the hype, let's give it another shot, maybe I missed something?".

It was actually much weaker the second time around. And it seemed way sillier.

I enjoyed this, thought the cast were good, especially the leads and I thought the subject matter was interesting in the current climate.

But I thought the twist that explained what was happening was on the one hand, not what I expected, but on the other hand a little silly.

Also, it reminded me of the 80s film Society, which had a similar theme and setup, but was about class rather than race.

Ultimately though I thought this had a lot going for it and was above the usual Hollywood fare and better than most of the recent quiet, quite, BANG horror flicks.

The first half was excellent. The second half wasn't (and yes, the "twist," if you can call it that, is as ridiculous as people have been saying). But by then, I was so pleased with the first half of the movie that it honestly didn't matter much to me. I laughed a lot throughout and I admired some of the creative cinematography, but I didn't think it was very scary. Then again, what is? Am I the only person who's become completely jaded by most horror films?

I also agree with Jeff that the "all whites are bad" shtick got kind of old, but it also didn't bother me too much. I guess they were leery of creating a "good" white character fearing that it would take away from the message of the movie (that pleasant/middle-class/polite whites can exhibit, or are complicit with, racist behavior).

The movie got me about my own identity. I'm technically half-white or "white-passing" and I reside in America, but I'm also a born-and-bred citizen of Mexico. Where would a film like this place me in its attempt to get its point across?

Either way, I liked it. But does it live up to the hype? No. At least not by my estimation. It's a fun, satirically-sharp movie that's rather dumb in its execution towards the end.

[P.S. Did anybody notice that the credits said there was a "creature puppeteer" and "creature designer" or something to that effect? Makes me wonder if something big was cut out of the movie.]
