Shamelessly cribs from the Tarantino playbook -- among others, but hey, Tarantino cribs, too -- but the film makes no bones about that and ends up ridiculously entertaining in its own right.
Unexpected music choices throughout that somehow blend perfectly with the most charismatic all-black cast I recall seeing anywhere. It's a damn shame Michael Kenneth Williams wasn't around for this. The cinematographer is having way too much fun, too, with sets that look more like a Disney version of the old west -- particularly when we travel to the "white" town, right down to the dirt in the streets.
It is intentionally all over the place and defies that to come together great. Liked this one a lot. I expected the wife to hate it, but even she dug it.
Loved 'The Harder They Fall'. great to see some of the unknown characters from the Wild West get such a riotous film to showcase them, and what an amazing cast!
Hmmm... I guess I'm the odd man out on this one. I watched just over an hour and couldn't finish it. I get it that it was intentionally over the top but I thought it an absolute pile of ____. My biggest issue is that I'm a huge fan of not just western film but western history as a whole. There was so much 'wrong' with their depiction that it distracted me from the film itself. Horrible CGI too.
LC, since you're not a fan of westerns, may like it. Let us know!
We were kinda looking forward to this though. Yup, suckers for any kind of Western. Usually when I do reviews I go into great detail, but for certain reasons I'll just do the Reader's Digest version. Yes, there were issues... storyline could've been stronger. Not enough dust, dirt, and sweat, excessive killing. At least they didn’t waste too much Heinz Ketchup on the shoot outs. Not bad by any means.
