I feel like I have had an uncanny good run of horror films lately. As much as I truly love the genre I can also admit that there are a hell of a lot more bad horrors than good and sometimes finding a good one can be few and far between.
Anyway, no in depth reviews just some recommendations from the great run I've had over the last few weeks. Some old, some new, liked them for a variety of different reasons...
X The Last Thing Mary Saw 1BR Mum and Dad The Cellar Martyrs Lane
X was (e)Xcellent! Horror with layers and yet doesn't play into A24 cliches, despite being distributed by A24 (no shade btw; I love them). Made me reconsider Ti West. Planning to revisit some of his earlier films, which I wasn't necessarily on board with the first time around.
Might be obvious at this point, but anyone who hasn't seen Bone Tomahawk yet should get on it stat. I recently revisited and found it to be a masterpiece, frankly. Tarantino caliber without trying to play tricks on the audience.

Couldn't agree more. Not for the faint-hearted. Brilliant in its originality. Dialogue is fantastic too. If your stomach's not up to the film's gory moments read the script at least.
Funny, 10+ years ago, I co-wrote a feature with the exact same premise. Lights. Camera. Die. My writing partner is convinced they stole our idea because he sent it out to a LOT of producers. I haven't had time to see X, but I'm sure it is a lot better than ours.
One I watched recently was The Evil That Men Do... I would say its a psychological Horror. It's darkly comedic too and enjoyable. Another favourite of mine is Dead Mans Shoes 2004. Its also a psychological horror as well. Big Bad Wolves 2013 is well worth a look too. I found it a refreshing take on an old trope.
