Curious what everyone's thoughts on this movie are. Predator is a favorite of mine and I saw it in the theater when it first came out. Prey seemed to be getting great reviews, so I was looking forward to seeing it. Somehow, this prequel didn't do it for me though. I didn't even finish it. It all seemed old hat. Sure, having native Americans instead of tough military guys was different, but I still felt I knew Predator and what it/he was all about, so it still felt old to me. I don't really want to go on about it just yet for fear that it would be too negative a review. What did you guys think?

I didn't make it past the Trailer.

FALL, on the other hand I'm looking forward to seeing.
But that's for another thread.

I enjoyed Prey, but it's definitely being over hyped. It's better than that last Predator movie at least. Lol. Still, some of the CGI was pretty dodgy. And "I want to be a hunter because you all think I can't." is very weak character motivation.

Fall looks intense, Libby! I might have to check that out on the big screen.

I really enjoyed Prey, an interesting take on a franchise that has been in the doldrums, and I'm hoping we now get a 300 version where the Predartor takes on the Spartans

I think Amber Midthunder has a very bright future

Maybe it’s cos I went in with really low expectations but I was pleasantly surprised by Prey.

Trailer was horrible. Usually trailers can make crappy movies look pretty good but this one did the opposite. Was expecting some Mary Sue type character with a chip on her shoulder and all the men being rubbish but it avoided that for the most part, and even the bit where she duffs up some guys helps set up for why she can fight when she goes head to head with the predator later… still, would have preferred it not being in there though. Same goes for the crappy CGI.

Mildly enjoyable, but baffled by the ending.  I have no idea how the physics and strategy behind those final predator-defeating moments were supposed to work.  Rewound it, watched it again -- but no idea what is going on there.

Axe on a rope seems like a bad weapon. You think you can f*ck yourself up with nunchucks, just try axe on a rope.

Couldn't agree more. I've watched this movie twice now, and the ending still doesn't make sense to me. It's almost like the Predator doesn't have a great grasp on how his own weaponry works.

I liked it! There was something a little clean and Disney-feeling about all of it but I thought it was tightly plotted and well shot and I thought the action was pretty cool.

Glad to hear from a hardcore-gore aficionado that it isn't just me. I was doubting my sci-fi creds.

But still waiting for the predator-nerd check-in to explain, "well, actually...(insert crazy explanation here)"

I think the main thing that made this not really work for me was the fact that I already knew the Predator. There wasn't really anything new there. The fact that this was also in the "open" compared to in the jungle made it less tense or scary. In the jungle, it felt like anything could be hiding anywhere without you knowing it. In the original, another factor that made it more scary was that "our heroes/team" were a bunch of super tough well armed well trained soldiers. Jeez, if they can't beat this thing, I'd be dead in a minute. The prequel has a young girl, physically weaker, not well armed, again, even more weak. In other words, we have the weakest up against an out of this world super fighter, but we know somehow she will survive/win. This is also not so subtly in her set-up. "You're just a girl. Girls are weak. Girls need us guys to protect them". Blah, blah blah. Such an obvious, I'm gonna show you set-up. Compare that to Ripley for example who was put down and snickered at, but not because she was a female, but rather because they thought of her as a corporate type and not a trained soldier. Much better than this constant "girls are just as strong/good/smart/whatever as boys we get beaten over the head with all the time. Show us that instead of saying it!!! As far as the axe on a rope goes, I actually liked it. It was a trained skill she had and that worked. It had nothing to do with her being female. Just a well trained skill.

Libby, Fall looks definitely more my thing! I will def check it out later. Hopefully in the theater when I test negative.

PS. I was born and raised in the land of the first female superhero which might explain a few things. Pippi Longstocking.

I loved it. I like any sci-fi moves that takes an existing concept and simplifies it entirely. Every other post-Arnold Predator movies made the mistake of being too complicated conceptually or too focussed on word building. I never cared about the background of the aliens or what they got up to when they weren't chasing people in the jungle.

I'm suspicious of anyone who criticises the "realsticness" of Prey but doesn't mention Predator, in which Arnold also defeats the advanced technology of the alien using nothing but mud and smarts. It's equally unrealistic. If it was realistic, there'd be no alien.

I enjoyed Predator, the original, but I haven't watched any of the sequels. The last sequel I enjoyed was Back to the Future.

The dust has settled...would have thrown in my two cents in earlier, but here's my thoughts.
I loved the film.

It was clearly established that this Predator is different from others we seen in the franchise (ad it has been established that there are different types of Preds)  This one is more stripped down and primal. It just didn't target the French trappers 'just because". It simply observed them killing buffalo. It regards targets as those who hunt and kill other ( sometimes defenseless)creatures.

It tests its own strength and cunning without the use of high tech gadgetry, such as the shoulder cannon. It savors its kills. Like other Predators, it can be outwitted, and some disadvantages exploited.

Sure,,,there are some questioable things like the herb lowering body temp, but i had no problem with the female lead character proving herself.

overall, i enjoyed it.
