Just noticed on the calendar that the next OWC is scheduled for next Friday 9th. Thought I'd mention it in case some people are interested.

If this has already been mentioned and I missed it... feel free to delete.

How many challenges and projects are happening on here at the moment and in the next few weeks? It'd be nice to have them all listed on one thread so people can get up to date.

Wow! I'm excited to try and go for this, but I'm leaving for a congress in Buffalo for the 15th of October and so I'll really need to dig deep.

Still, I'm ready to be a game-girl!!! I love to play!!!!

Coming up with a challenge, or a game, or a series is becoming very popular nowadays.

That's actually a good thing.  It means people are being creative.

True, but people also need time to work on their own projects.  And, if there are several of these going on at once, each one will only get a handul of entries; they will all suffer from lack of participation.

No one is forced to enter anything, and if they choose to do so it is surely their business.

In any case, they might write something for a OWC or whatever that they can develop beyond the confines of the specific challenge.

Although I did not in the event enter it, my primary reason for joining SS was because I thought I might write an entry for the August OWC. It was thinking about that which I believe began me writing again, even though I did not in the end produce a challenege specific project.

The point I'm trying to make is that people cannot enter all of these competitions and, if they are split up among said competitions, then the number of entries in each will suffer.

Also, part of the fun of the original OWC is that you may end up writing something you may not normally write.  If you don't like the genre and theme of the OWC, you may say, "I'll enter the other one."  If a director/producer/filmmaker came up to you and asked you to write a comedy that takes place in a yo-yo factory, would you turn him down and wait for the next filmmaker to ask you to write something?

I don't see a problem with providing people a choice of what to be involved in.

As a general rule we discourage people from scheduling anything else during an OWC so I don't think there will ever be a dearth of people entering the OWCs. But I don't see any reason to make the OWC the only show in town either.

The more choices and the more events on the site, the more people it supports.  Allowing the site to grow is not a bad thing.

I agree. Some people might be inclined towards one thing and not another. Having a variety of options is a good thing.

Again, if a director came up to you and wanted you to write a script based on his parameters, would you try writing it?  Or would you wait for a different director to ask you for a script that's more to your liking?

It's not as much a challenge if you have a choice.

The only choice is to write or not to write that is the question choice.

That is the first.

The second is

Caring about what you're writing and caring about the audience that you're writing for.

Everything else is everything else.

People are still going to chose whether or not to do an entry in the OWC because of the genre and theme - even if 10 things are going on.

This hypothetical director thing is just that, hypothetical.   What do you want to do - force people to participate?

The OWC time is left clear of other events giving everyone the opportunity to say yes to participating if they want to.  Nothing has changed.

It's kind of silly to think it should be the only activity on the site just because someone might want to do something else at a later time.  Get real.

I think I'll argue with myself so that Michael and Phil don't have to and they can join me.

Sandra,

Where do you have choice?

I ain't got no choice. I have to write. Period.

Of course you do. Why don't you go have some fun. Play your guitar. Give yourself a break you silly gourd!

No! Now that you mention gourd, I'm already thinkin' Halloween and of pumkins.

So, you gonna do the OWC?

I really wanna try.

Are we still arguing?

I don't know. Are we?

Maybe we're not doing such a good job.

Ah Phil? Michael? You think you can help me out here?

Yes. As Dirty Harry so rightly said, a man's gotta know his limitations and I know mine - I can't write comedies.

A producer/director is much more likely to approach someone to write a project which they know you can write than just anyone in the hope that they'll be able to turn out something along the lines that they want. They may as well stop people in the street and ask them if they can write a screenplay as do that!

In other words, our yo-yo factory comedy producer might look at SS and see two scripts - one a bleak drama of loss and lonliness set in Siberia 1910, the other a comedy set in a pie factory. Which writer do you think he'd want to talk to?

Just want to nip in and make the point that these challenges don't really overlap that much. It's not like there are a number of different 'short' challenges competing with the OWC. The challenges aren't trying to steal each other's entries, they're asking the entrants to do completely different things. I'd be surprised if people thought, "Gosh, that OWC theme is hard. I'll go off and try the feature one instead, that'll be easier."

And since the number of entrants in the last two OWCs has been 30+ (including some complete newcomers who'd never posted a script before), I don't think there's much risk of it fading out of existence anytime soon.

Guess who's back? Back again?

I wouldn't be.  Depending on the genre and theme, writing the feature could easily be the less chsllenging of the two.

Look at this way...This OWC will be a good warm up to work out the kinks and implement the lessons learned from the Music OWC; then take all that combined wisdom and insight to apply to any feature project, which will almost certainly be better than if the previous exercises had not been undertaken...

Just a heads up.  In less than 24 hours, the October One Week Challenge (OWC) genre and theme will be released.

The October OWC is a bacchanalian (just google it) writing fest.  Past years the themes have included "Milk", "Carving Pumpkins" and "Community Invasion".  Get your pencils sharpened and get ready to think outside the box.  This year's theme and genre is guaranteed to vex (again, google is your friend, here) and annoy.

Mr. Cornetto,

Please try to limit your responses to the English language. Scandalous usages of language such as "pique" and "sanguinary" will not be tolerated. This is a 'family friendly' site.  In the future, please use more acceptable words such as arterial blood spurting.

Don, this is definitely a very curious idea... =)

I could this could be pretty interesting and I'm excited. Time to do what I do best. Write a opening scene and never get back to that story again. Lol.

EDIT: I hate this. There's two ways I want to take the story, but I can't. Damn you! Lol.

we have to use paper and pencils??

not to be negative here, but I would actually prefer fewer entries than it has been lately. easier to read them and the "winning" script might actually go to someone that frequent these boards...

I wouldn't sweat it.  I think Pia has forgotten that we here at S.S. are the ones who gave M.P. a little guy named Matias.

Will probably be some time before that debt gets repaid haha -- and in the long run, I suspect all of that board-mixing is probably a good thing.

It wasn't necessarily directed at you Marnie, but we've had many people in the past only do the OWC and nothing else. I personally think it's more fun when someone I "know" wins than someone that just shows up once.

As far as Mr. Z goes, I just read a feature of his that blew that Carnival Row script away. Did I tell you he's cute too?

Sorry, I'm here again) for OWC... only.

If there were other challenges here, I'd try to participate. It's kind of hard to participate in anything unless it's a challenge with set time limits etc... Or maybe it's only this twisted...

I don't drink, so the only way for me to get into bacchalanian mood is to hold my snout shut for a while (don't try this it's dangerous, I'm not kidding) and see what happens. They say the effects maybe very strong, depends on how long you can hold your breath, of course.

I'm really looking forward to writing something with a horror/Halloween theme. I'd only just joined last year and missed the October one.

It'll be a change from writing horribly anyway.

But I'm determined to put some comedy in, no matter how 'scary' or 'blood-spattered' the actual theme might be.

And of course there MIGHT be some Beatles references too...

Kay guys, I really need your power thoughts. I feel I'm coming down with what Jeff just had. It's going around all over the place like a bad computer virus.

If I get too sick, I'm not going to be able to play this round and I've got to head to Buffalo next week. I better be better by then.

Sandra, what worked for me, finally was a Z Pac. It has to be prescribed by a doctor, but they sure help.  It's a 4 day pill thing...2 the first and 1 for 4 more days.

It works...get thee to a doctor!

Agreed. Z-Pak (zithromax) will take care of what ails ya, with minimal hassle and no horse pills. Course, I'm not a doctor or pharmacist, although I do write about them on occasion.

Looks like we are heading to Universal in Orlando tomorrow. Should be a good source of inspiration, provided the topic has nothing to do with punkin' carvin' or apple bobbin'...
