Good articles - I've read similar stuff from other sites, but this one seems to have a collection in one place.

Site seems to be written by Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio - they did  Shrek, Godzilla, Mask of Zorro, and all of the  Pirates of the Caribbean films - and other stuff - and a lot of the articles seem to be written by them - so stuff from the horses mouth.

Yeah, Rossio is good.  I have to admit, never heard of the site, but I think we all know how difficult it is.  And he makes a lot of great points, and I chuckled at this one in particular...

Sometimes the concept is to do a reversal on some aspect of an established genre ('only this time, the ghosts have to exorcise the people!'). Then again, sometimes an entire genre is re-worked with a series of new ideas ... thus 'updating' or 'reviving' the genre for a whole new generation of filmgoers. RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK, BODY HEAT, and STAR WARS all fall into this category.
A word of caution: this sort of attractive concept is very difficult to do, takes a massive amount of inspired work, and demands a huge amount of talent.

I took this approach about two years ago for the reasons he stated, I found it to be very attractive.  About it being difficult, it was... took me about 12 months to finish that script.   Can't say I've got a huge amount of talent by any means, so only time will tell if I pulled it off.

My secret stash revealed!
Damn you, Simon.

A feature producer I'm writing for turned me onto this site a while back.
He encouraged me to steep myself in the philosophies...
As a result of that, it really gave me some great insights.
And I was able to carry them into the assignment I took on from him.
So that will also help me develop the tale with him...
Since he already knows I take his advice and read things he likes/admires.

So, it's a personal improvement and networking win in this case!
Good call, Simon... you blabber mouth.

Regards,
E.D.
