Badass lines are the most quotable. What would everyone consider to be the most badass line(s) of dialogue you’ve written?
Here’s my favourite lines:
“Feign ignorance if you must, your fate remains the same.”
“This all happens in the city this man swore to make prosperous! He failed his city and he failed his people, and the penalty for his crimes is death.”
“I'm sick of hearing there's always some good in people, or that everyone is just trying to do their best in life. I know that is a lie because I know that there are people whose sole purpose is to bring suffering and death upon others. I know that pure evil does exist.”
“President Hatova sent us. We have direct orders to drill a few pointers into your brain. From now on you run this Sector the way master Hatova wants it run.”
“Judging by the force of that quake, I think it is safe to say that that homeless scum has just had his body torn apart violently. On a molecular level at that! A demise too simple for someone of his caliber. A penniless, worthless waste-of-life.”
“We need what’s inside a-ya.” “You cannibal freak! We don't even have any meat on us! We are made out of plastic!” “And blood. And organs! And y’all have one organ we don’t. The blood-recycler.”
“Don't worry, son. Your mother and I will bring your old hands back again. We'll make you normal again, I promise.”
Well it is definitely hard to read your own dialogs and select which one of them is badass. Here are three dialogs from my script THE BOX. I don't know if they are badass or not. Let's see.
1) No, I meant the fly. Poor thing. Maybe it was having a time of its life in the box but wasn't aware of its fate.
2) He deserved it. I mean fuck if anyone comes near my kid. Especially, a scourge like him.
3) Can't you wrap your head around this? We fucking dropped a goddamn box and heard nothing.
There’s overlap between badass and quotable, but if you look at lists of quotable lines (for example this one) they tend to have a few things in common:
They tend to be relatively short. Most (but certainly not all) avoid names specific to the film. Often they don’t really make sense unless you’ve seen at least clips of the movie.
These features combine to make it a shorthand for a shared experience. (I am talking of course of general moviegoers. Superfans and genre geeks will pride themselves on being able to quote the entire film.)
So you’ll see things like “I’ll be back,” “May the Force be with you,” and “You can’t handle the truth!” You won’t see things like the monologue by Syndrome in The Incredibles, no matter how entertaining it was at the time.
Writing a line like that is hard, and even harder to do on purpose. The closest things like that in my writing, I think, are “It’s not happening,” from Who Wants to Be a Princess? and “Time? I have nothing BUT time!” in Glass House.
I like 2) the best. To me, badass dialogue should be about or mention violence or sometimes condones peace, should sound unique, and could easily be repeated or said for laughs. Also, the accompanying visuals and line delivery can have a lot to do with it. Badass lines are commonly found in sci-fi, fantasy, horror, action, and western films.
“Time? I have nothing BUT time!” Sounds cool. I agree the most quoted and spoofed lines are short. The monologue/introduction of the character Syndrome is a great example of badass dialogue. One of my favourite short badass line is: “I don’t care.” from The Fugitive, and it definitely needs context to back it up.
Lol actually I just realized all you have to do is add the preceding line to know it’s badass: “I didn’t kill my wife.”
On a side note, which existing movie character would you say says the most badass lines in a single movie? I would say it's Bane from The Dark Knight Rises.
