You shouldn't reveal anything, Gary.  Just sit back and listen to who claims what piece as yours...

Yep, thanks for the heads up, Gary, but definitely don't make any revelations yet.  Savor the mystery.  Now to do a quick edit.

I'm floored people think I wrote Slipping. A compliment compared to the one I actually wrote.  Old people and dying? I think I've only done that once.

So many of these are tough to call.   I also thought Brett might have written Anne Goes to Camp.  And maybe Greg wrote Splitzkrieg.  I know it has to be a California guy who wrote that one.  Maybe we all assumed Phil wrote one just because he's back, but he's just reviewing this time.  So many questions...

Moving this here. I would love to see a discussion of people's top scripts. To be honest, I'm having a hard time choosing a top 3. All of these are about the same for me. Except for Dark Escort. That's only on the list because I like scripts where they do shots!

My Finalists

These are the ones I want to go back and reread. If I forgot one, I'm sure I'll see it on other's lists, and add it here. There are a lot of good ones not on my list. Sometimes they were good ideas that were poorly written, or sometimes they were very well written but the story didn't grab me. Obviously these are just my amateur opinions, hopefully they help the writer in some little way. This list is in no particular order.

Lucy’s Closet

Worth a second look. The story is attempting to grapple with the powerful emotional issue of explaining death to a child, and the issues of closure that arise when a young child loses a parent. It’s also exploring issues of time, consciousness and physics. A bold attempt, so worth wrestling with.

For Customers Only

Dark comedy written by a veteran writer. Some comic tension and scenario based comedy, and some funny moments. The writer may have been running out of time or ideas after the squirt gun was fired on the restroom door, but that was a great moment that makes this worth a closer look.

Slipping

Powerful emotional drama dealing with death and loss, as well as the dependency of old age. Very well written, an effective curve ball thrown in the middle. With more development could be a keeper, so worth a second read.

Wicker

Expertly crafted. My first instinct is that this can be made outstanding, but that as it currently stands, there are some logical problems with the behavior of the police. Perhaps the writer will clear those up after the reveal. It’s worth a second look because of the craftsmanship of the writing, to make sure I didn’t miss something.

Anne Goes to Camp

I felt this one crossed the line a little, but I could be wrong on that, and no one else seemed to think so. I also felt Nancy’s reaction of puking was WAY over the top, even for a satire. I myself am a history guy, and I hate how Hollywood butchers history, though it seems to me its motivations are usually ideological. So I should find this angle appealing, but it didn’t work for me the first read. I think this one would be expensive to film if the Anne at Camp cartoon was filmed, and I’m really not sure any producer wants to go there anyway. If there is no cartoon clip, then I’m not sure we have enough interesting going on onscreen. But this one is clearly crafted by a veteran writer so worth another look.

Dark Escort

Any story with shots in it!

First Time

This is one of my favorites. I need to go over it again. I think there were some problems with execution. The dialogue needs some work. Since I think most of us can see the twist coming, it might be worth while to add a little more tension and menace to the early dialogue, if that can be done without totally ruining the twist. Maybe just make it a little dark.

I’m also not sure about the suddenness of the hooker’s becoming so aroused by the young man. It may require some tweaking to make that work, and it might be better to dispense with the intercourse. She mentions she has a rule against kissing, and maybe kissing would be better than intercourse, more believable, easier to film. I realize that kills your scene downstairs when the madam smiles at the screaming sex, but is that really even needed?

I like the story because we see the loss of the young vampire’s final humanity. He has trouble with the idea of killing to feed, so he chooses a prostitute, thinking they are society’s waste. But he discovers she is very human, with kids and a heart that feels both anger and affection like anyone else. But he still kills her, and is thus truly initiated into the soulless world of the vampire.

What a Wonderful World

Anything written this well deserves consideration. We’re dealing with serious, gritty darkness here. It might be a little too much, and the death of the boy seemed a little convenient. Also, this does not seem like that kind of thing someone would want to film. Smoking crack, lying but in the air on the couch, incest, child molestation…man. That’s not something you can put on you tube when you’re done!

Remnant

Well written, with flourishing, believable dialogue. The idea is not new, so whether it works or not comes down to the details. My first impression was ‘close but no cigar’, but definitely worth another look. Couple of problems lingered in my mind: first, we need to know a little more about this black market procedure. How long has it been around, who else has the technology, what are the limitations and restrictions referred to? These are things hopefully I will understand better on reread. The other problem, perhaps the biggest since it was so essential to the story, was the reusing of Steve’s body. The guy was in such rough shape, I never really got that. Was some repair done? Makeup? I think resolving this question could actually lead to a real evolution in this story. For example, what if Steve was actually a young, strapping, healthy guy who got shot or stabbed, and had a short time to live. In fact, maybe he does this only because he won’t make it to a hospital. Then, when the next guy comes along, one could see why he would find Steve’s body appealing.

Sweet Justice

Excellent, entertaining writing. True skill and talent. Limp Wristed Larry is very memorable, mostly because of the effective dialogue. With the right actor, this could be hilarious. I think it needs…more. Not much happened. There’s no real character development. Its kind of like a character introduction. That’s exactly what it’s like. Picture a feature with an ensemble, and this was the scene that introduces Larry. Perfect introduction. I just think for it to be a story, there should be a little more. Maybe a short doesn’t need to be a story, though. Maybe a character intro is enough. I’ll stop into the lavender saloon once more before I vote.

Splitzkrieg

Fine writing, an engaging story. Might have been a little issue with tone here: was it drama, comedy, or something else? The things I will look for on reread: if it’s drama, is the tension and conflict high enough? If it’s comedy, is it funny? There was a lingering feeling that this lacked some kind of final turn or twist. The intended twist is that the Nazi is actually a Nazi hunter, but to be honest, I saw that coming and wasn’t shocked by it. I never felt any danger for the kids, maybe because of the whole children’s game aspect. Then after the “twist” we still have several pages to go, with nothing eventful happening. The moral applied at the end, where the kids are no longer interested in war, fell flat. I have to read that again. I mean, the Nazi hunter awarded them a British medal for bravery in the field. How did he turn them off from war? I have to go back and look.

My guess is that everyone that read one wrote one.  Even if they only read the one they wrote.

Aside from that I'm going to go with

Anne Goes to Camp - Possible it could be Phil but I think Brett.
Splitzkrieg - Greg (that asscrack line at the end is a giveaway)
Criterion - There can be only one.

And that's about my guesses.  It's difficult because there's lots of newer people whose writing I don't know.

Yeah, but I also saw your Facebook post where you said Chuck Norris broke into your bedroom and forced you to write something last minute.

If Phil didn't write Anne Goes to Band Camp, then Janet did...but I am pretty sure Phil did write it and is now trying to be sneaky cause he knows that we know...

Speaking of asscrack, I think there were actually 2 scripts with that classic "word".
