Kinda...

See, I have a problem. I have 2 computers... and a lap top. My computer "from which I work from, as in screen writing" crashed today and I can't get anything to work on it.

I've been on the phone all day and talking to people all day...

I need to know how I can get some of the material off of the hard drive in that computer into one of my other computers... Can anyone help me with this?

I was told you can open them both up and slave it to the other computer, but when I did that it looked kinda tasking... and would probably need some help.

What can I do? All my scripts, all my idea's, all my songs and poems ... EVERYTHING is in this one damn computer!!! I have back ups of some of it, but not any of my recent work and that scares me cause my recent work is what I'm most proud of it seems.

Anyways... any help would be great!

bgallth, this happened to me once.  What I did was the computer with my stuff, it would startr but go to like a black code screen.  Then I was talking to some dell guy and he told me to type a code, i did so, and the computer went back to normal.  Unfortunately I was told that it would crash "for good" any second so i needed to quickly copy my files to a floppy disk then transport them to my good computer.

I think the key is to call the company that made the computer.

Do you have the recovery CDs that came with the computer? I've had to reboot my computer a few times because of viruses.
When you put the CD in, there should be something come up that says do you want to recover or do you want it to go back to the factory settings. Hit the recover, and that way you won't loose anything.
What I usually do with my scripts is e-mail them to myself. That way if my computer crashes, well, I can always go to my e-mail after the computer is fixed, and save them on the desktop again, but I always save them in my e-mail as well.

Although I could probably help you by physically being there with you (I'm a computer tech), it's really hard to explain by typing out.

I would honestly take it to a computer shop and ask the clerk to slave the hard drive for you so you can save the data. Just tell him it crashed, but you need all the data from it.

Hopefully it's a software crash and not a hard drive crash.

Ah yes, this has happened to me many, many, many times before...well only like 5, but still.  I have a 2001 Compaq Presario with Windows ME and a tiny harddrive, so this thing was prone to problems.

Anyway, there are a few things you can do.
1) Depending on how fatal the situation is, you can try rebooting in safe mode.  To do that you press F4 repeatedly when you start the machine up.
2) If you can't get that far, echoing Cindy, a startup disk would be nice in this situation because it allows you to access Windows and get your shtuff off.
3) Are you getting any error messages or what's happening here?  If there are numbers or errorr messages, do a search for them on the net.  You'll be surprised at what comes up.
4) Hooking both compturs up and doing the slaving thing should work in most cases, but you'll probably need someone there who knows what they're doing.
5) Take it to a computer nerd.  That's what I had to do after a virus killed my system and I got this "Reinstall Windows" message.  The computer was almost certainly gonna be purged, thus losing everything, but the nerd saved it somehow.  Cost $100 bucks, but it depends how valuable your shtuff is to you, which I'm assuming is pretty darn valuable.

Hope this helps!

Be excellent to each other

Thanks guys... I've not a clue as to the state of my problem yet... I took it to a computer shop today and paid them to back up any files they could onto disk.

When he booted it up he had to do some configuration stuff but he got Windows to kinda boot up... not like going into windows but it showed the windows xp screen and then it went to my "PAGE FAULT IN NON PAGED AREA" screen thing that caused the whole mess.

He told me that windows is still there "sort of" and that means files still have to be active in the harddrive.

I guess i'll find out tomorrow the bad/good news... I pray and hope to god I don't loose my work. I've got some of it backed up "like I said" but a lot of my newer stuff will be gone... 4th and 5th drafts of several screenplays and new screenplays all together will be lost. I'm pretty sick over all this right now...

I went out and bought me an external hard drive -- in the event that if I do get my stuff back this'll never happen again. I also went and bought some back up DVD's --

Here's to me having some hope and some chance in having just some luck... I don't ask for much, I really don't. I just neeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed my stuff back, that's all. The computer can go to hell for all I care. I'll drop it off the roof of my house and run over it with my car as long as I get my files back.

Anyways, thank you all for your help and I'll keep you posted on this.

Mission... accomplished!!!! I got the call from Best Buy's Geek Squad "and they are... trust me" but they did get my stuff back and not just some of it... all of it. I love them guys now! They asked me what I wanted to do with the computer and I said toss it!

All I need is those disk baby!

Anyways... AWHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I can get back to my writing and I don't have to restart and I still got Coffin Canyon and just... wow! Thank the lord on this one. From now on I will back up every single thing I do. Every time I finish writing I will burn it to a cd or dvd or a floppy disk... whatever it takes cause this made me loose a handful of hair I reckon.

Anyways, thanks for all your help guys.
