I don't really want to say too much of anything, for fear of lessening the experience, but it's probably simple enough to say that this is a movie that's totally unique in a way that serves its story perfectly, and also that it's an unusual, fascinating, and challenging watch. Personally, I didn't know until after watching the movie why it looked the way it did, but I'll say this much…it looked friggin' great.
For the scriptwriter, the lessons in this one are probably about the power of silence. The script must have been about 40 pages long.
Scarlett Johahnsson has instantly gone, in my eyes, from being so lame that even Woody Allen movies didn't make her cool, to being about the awesomest actor around.
Personally, I would consider even the simple plot synopses on the likes of Wikipedia and IMDb to be significant enough spoilers that I would avoid them. If the trailer looks like your kind of thing, I'd otherwise go into this one as blind as possible.
I didn't enjoy it that much while watching, it got a bit tiresome but as the last 5 min rolled around, I decided that I like it.
It's funny, when I was like 14-15 years old I had far more patience for movies such as this. It's getting harder and harder for me to stick it out till the end these days... but I still do.
This is a niche movie. Very little dialogue, no "real" plot, not much is happening etc. But it's got an atmosphere going for it. It's my kind of movie. I would compare it to Valhalla Rising, which I also liked.
Like that movie, most viewers will have to preserve through this as well because it's hard not to find it dull. But it's worth watching till the end IMO. The movie isn't really vague about what it is and what is happening.
It's based on a novel. I read after watching it that the story is expanded and explained more in the book. It is a bit vague in what Scarlett's character is doing here in the movie but it still worked for what it was in my eyes.
If you like movies like "Valhalla Rising", "Only God Forgives", heck even movies like "The Limey", "Rachel Getting Married". You might like this. If not STAY AWAY.
I suspect STF is drunk. Or maybe upset. Or looking for a row. He's usually far more eloquent.
I thought this was ghastly weird, but rather exciting. I've never seen anything like it. Very unusual to see such an A lister in a downbeat and unusual setting. Much like It Follows, this is an unusual and fairly original horror movie. I was rather impressed.
