Ashoka writes,

I've launched a kickstarter campaign for a short sci-fi film that I want to make called 'Perchance To Dream'. At the moment it's just a script but you guys can help by making it into a short film. All you have to do is make a pledge, $1 min (australian dollars)

Here's the link for more details https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/perchancetodream/perchance-to-dream-short-film?ref=user_menu

Sounds like an interesting idea for a script. I checked out the Kickstarter as I've just finished putting my own campaign togeather, it's taken about 8 months to build.

Sorry to be a negative voice in a time like this but this campaign will not succeed. I say this after looking at thousands of campaigns and these are the reasons why. I say this so once the campaign ends you can come back stronger and potentially have a funded film.

1) The creator has not backed any campaigns on Kickstarter.

I think it really hurts your chances if you are and indie writer, filmmaker, or creator of any type who doesn't support indie creators but expects people to open their wallets for your project. I think you should back a few projects similar to yours.

2) $50 000 is too much for your first campaign.

It may be how much you need to make your film, but it's just not realistic. You need to find ways to lower this significantly.

3) Your reward tiers.

You have two rewards tiers of a dollar each and neither of them are ideal. $1 to see the premier? I think you are doing your film an injustice. A movie theater premier would not be cheap, also if you are making a $50 000 film, offering it for $1 is great for your pledges but it's unrealistic for you.

Your second reward will only appeal to a very very small portion of people so you won't make much money there.

If you had taken some time to explore other projects you would see that a backer count of 50 000 is extremely unrealistic for a short film from a first time creator with no backed projects.

You are essentially making it that you would need 50 000 backers by only offering $1 rewards. Sure some might pledge more, but what's the incentive?

I would consider a reward structure similar to this:

$1 - Thank you credit in the film

$5 - Thank you and a digital download of the film

$10 - All of the above and a physical copy of the film.

$30 - All of the above and some sort of merch (T shirt, key ring etc.)

$1000 - All of the above, and a producer credit in the film's credits and on IMDb.

Also offer certain rewards in limited supply, like the producer reward only do 3 or 5 or something like that.

Having a tiered reward structure will give your campaign a much greater chance at success. You also need to provide your backers with a legitimate incentive to back your project.

Anyway... sorry to be a negative voice in such a shit time, but I think you can do much better. As it stands this won't succeed. The fact that you launched in a COVID-19 world is also going to limit your funding potential.

Good luck.
