Loved, loved, loved the first season, and admittedly I'm only up to Ep. 3 of the second but finding it a bit treading water in comparison to the first. The comedy's just not hitting the mark for me as the first one was, and I'm pretty easy to get a laugh out of - especially with Gervais.
There are still moments of inspiration that are raising a chuckle - the Yogi/Meditation scene with The slurping, mucus-snorting instructor was spot on. The drawn out montage with/Karen Carpenter song overlaid however? I kept thinking a sound effect of the record-needle skipping and coming to a grinding halt was going to interrupt in true self deprecating Gervais cynicism, but no, it played all the way through. The elderly woman celebrating her 100th Birthday in the nursing home repeating the word: 'cunt' was funny the first time (even though it's a well used trope) but it felt like it needed a few different words like bollocks or tosser thrown into the mix to up the humour. After all, repetition only works do far, topping the humour is more of a skill.
In comparison, that other one of a kind hit series, Fleabag, managed through its two season run to continue to delight with no real patchy or lacklustre moments.
I'm just hoping that Afterlife gets better with ensuing episodes (I'm hoping my assessment is premature) and manages to resurrect some of the spark and wit and inventiveness of the first. Fingers crossed.

It'll be interesting to see where you land on this. The 2nd season does have more drama in it than the 1st - but I think you will be pleased with the arcs
