Since there is such an interest in discussing this film - I'm curious as to what people thought of this film. 8)

I, for one, liked it as it was the first film I'd seen that pretty much showed everything I've seen about teens in real life onto film, and that has never been done before.

I also liked it because it broke away from all that corny american teenbopper comedies that star the c**t, that is Hilary Duff.

Evan Rachel Wood, doesn't get enough recogition, Lindsay Lohan and Hilary Duff hog it all.

I wasn't a fan - but it was refreshing to see a film that went outside the hollywood norm.

Nikki Reed and Evan Rachel Wood are good actors - though I can't say the same about Holly Hunter.

I forgot to even ask this, what was it that you didn't like about Thirteen?

Mainly I thought that it had no direction. They did some rebelious thing, did drugs and had sex.
You never really got to know the character and a lot of the situations were pretty much cliches.

For me it did seem like it was pitched as a cautionary tale.
On the plus side the acting was good and Nikki Reed may have a future in writing.

Speaking of films like Thirteen - what did you think about the film "Elephant"?

For me - it had no direction and was the epitome of teen drama cliches.

Saw it. For the first hour I was bored to death. Then it picked up, it seemed pointless. Had no characters. I didn't gete it, although I did think it was kinda interesting. I think it was based on Columbine.

I dont see how it was a cliche though.
I also don't see it being like Thirteen.

Yeah it was based on Columbine - it seems the cast and crew were just trying to get an easy drama peice.

The way the characters acted was an entire cliche.
I say it's like Thirteen because it's a teen based drama.

And sadly that cheap dramatic trick (fictionalizing a tragedy and relying on cliches) won acclaim.

Thirteen had some redeeming qualities.

Anyways, since ur a teen, could you really not relate to anyone of the Thirteen characters?

I could in some aspects.
Although I've never really been restricted so I really see no reason to rebel.

This is Your Life:
You could have an interesting dramatic trilogy, although you rely too much on shock value. I think if you combined the films into one tuned down the content you could very well have the next "Thirteen".
But right now what happens is too absurd and graphic to be taken seriously.

You need to diversify your characters - that way the drama has more impact.

You've stated that you enjoy shocking peolpe - and that's fine, but I don't think that it's an appropriate thing to do for a drama with teens.

By too graphic I mean you had burning kittens among other stuff.

I donnow. I have this thing where I write something, about 10 pages, then I get this other idea, write about 10 pages of that, then things happen in my life and I take a break and then when I come back to it I;m bored of it and I've forgotten most of the exicitng ideas (that i didn't write donw) that I wass gonna use in it and then I hit a dry spot.

But right now, I've a good 20 pages of a drama script called "Obsessesion"

The sypnosis is pretty much in the title.

We've filled 2 pages of a thread in the past hour with just 2 people.

BTW what did you think of "The Everland".
It's a script I wrote a while back and I haven't got a lot of feedback on it.

I've never read it and I can't because it's in SCI-FI, I just don't understand that genre.

It's has a few Orwellian themes - and personally I'm not a fan of the genre either.

What the hell does Orwellian mean?

If you have anything in Drama or Horror, I'll read it. I kinda limiti myself to only those to because watching ACTION can be exciting, but I think reading it, would just be boring. COMEDY's can be okay to watch (very small few of them, mind you) but my humour is veerrrry dark and dry which is why I much prefer to read DRAMA cuz there's always a hint of dark comedy in them.

Orwellian often refers to writings that relate to an oppresive government.
It relates to George Orwells 1984.

If you're not interested in Sci fi you may want to read my Simpsons short.
It's under the short section.  8)

I thought that Thirteen was a bit trashy, and really had no purpose other than to say "Look, this is what kids are doing nowadays."  It didn't have a particular storyline, there were too many glitzy MTV quick cuts, and it didn't really conclude, perhaps due to the fact that there was nothing to conclude.  

I didn't like it.

Written by the movie's director and one of the stars based on some of her life experiences, Thirteen is a disturbing film showing the worst path a young person can take as she is manipulated by the most popular girl in school, and the agony of her mother watching her daughter fall apart before her eyes before she knows what happened.

The popularity card is always a hot button, and it started there and ran with the story. R rating aside, even if this movie were PG, it is more of a parental movie than a teenager movie. Although the movie is about a teen on the surface, the real plot concerns the relationship between the girl and her mother. I doubt the young co-writer had much to do with this deep high concept.

I went into this film with low expectations and was shocked at how good it really was. It is still disturbing, especially wondering and watching just how far down the rabbit hole this girl will venture before she hits the bottom and has to climb out. Before we could hit the best ending, the girl and the mother both had to grow. I think as a parent, I understood it more than someone who is actually thirteen would...or at least got the point.

I think that Thirteen was realistic in a way -- I've never seen thirteen-year-old girls act that way, but I've certainly heard about it. However, I've seen films that deal with the same story on Lifetime television for women.
