SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Questions or Comments  /  Rating system for scripts

Just a thought - why not have a rating system based on the context of the script.
Sound cool?  8)

Isn't that what the stars you can give beside the names on the board? Like vote out of 5 or do you mean something else.

I mean like if the script is PG-13 or R rated material.  8)

Oh yeah, that would be cool. my scripts for the most part would be rated r or NC 17 and they're mostly dramas

I was thinking something like:

E - the script basically is a family friendly fare.

PG - Same as the MPAA's PG

13 - Basically close to PG-13

PG-15 - A limbo between PG-13 and 17.

17 - The same of a regular R rated film.

18 - A script that some would consider a hard R.

X - The same as NC-17

Of course these ratings can always be changed.  8)

It could just be another option like adding your name but here's something, when you send it just add that in at the end of the synopsis and Don puts it on the board and well it's rated.

That's a lot better than Don having to add more options and or things of that nature.

That's sort of what I was thinking.
Adding at the end of the synopsis could work - I'm just thinking that at least we could establish ratings everyone can agree on, you know.

I mean yeah, of course but I think for the most part who would object to adding a rating to there script? That's like objecting to having your script posted

Maybe we should have less because less is more but really it wouldn't matter, just gives people a few different ratings to choose from.

You have the r and than the hard r rating which is a good idea but you'd have to explain what encorporates a hard r or just an r. I know for most horror scripts they'd be up in those r and up ratings but which one would be the thing you need to sell

Think of Basic Instinct and films like those - I'd put them in the hard R category.

Never seen basic instinct but I get it kinda

my scripts are Rated E then..

Because Relapse of the Dead is a family film..

I forsee a lot of X's in my future. Because as anyone who's read my stuff knows, I don't shy away from the violence or language.

Mine would all be PG-13 with the exception of COFFIN CANYON and it's two follow ups.

The only thing I have in most of my movies is the cussing and some cut away gore.  I don't go overboard on blood and guts and usually, more often than not, don't even use it.  I have some instances, though... not many.

COFFIN CANYON
RETURN TO COFFIN CANYON
CANNIBLE CANYON: dead men tell no tales

Are really the only graphic violenced and adult themed movies I've really written.

The raiting is a novle idea though... kinda.

All in all, I think it's a great idea.  Don is it something you would consider?

If such a rating system were adapted, I'd imagine it'd be up to the author to decide what it's rated based on selections in the submission form, because I don't think Don would want to go through every script on the site to judge their content.

We could come up with a universal system, a set of parameters to help writers rate their script.
Posted by: Shonagh, February 18th, 2005, 9:18am; Reply: 16
Universal as in international, because those classifications don't mean anything to me - we have U, PG, 15 or 18 and I'm not sure which ratings are equivalent.

Exactly. For people from different countries/regions, it would be hard for them to choose acurrately. If we had an actual set of specific guidelines as to the content of a script, it would pretty much eliminate that.

people who read the scripts could post what they think it should be rated.  and we could even do a numerical system like 1-10 1 being the most child friendly and ten being like gruesomly adult.

Yeah. I think the rating system thing would be a good idea. I do it for all my scripts. Most of them get an R rating tho lol.

Yeah that would be pretty good.

I agree, that would help people get a sense of what they're getting involved in.  Don't think there should too many ratings, maybe like 4 or 5.
Posted by: Old Time Wesley, March 27th, 2005, 3:42pm; Reply: 22
People should add there own rating at the end of there synopsis when sending it in or in extras comments because that would help Don a lot more than him having to do it all himself.

I agree with Wesley.  It would be easier to begin with folks just adding after their synopsis their rating.  I do have in mind, for future releases, adding content rating to the submission form.  However, you all know how long it takes for me to implement new functionality to the site.

Oftentimes, you'll apologise because something "took too long" at times when no one complained.

I think a lot of people are just glad that the site's up, and that it's updated.  It doesn't matter how long it takes, as long as the site is still active in one way or another, it's better than a lot of similar sites who've tried in the past, and failed to do what you've accomplished.

You deserve a round of applause.

I second that. A site that changes slowly (but is updated constantly) is far better than a site that remains stagnant. You've put a lot of time and effort into making Simply Scripts work, and even if you never add any new features I don't think it would make the site lose any of it's value.

Why not make the rating system simple

Youngsters - 0 - 5
Kids 6 - 10
Young Teens - 11 - 15
Teens - 16 - 17
Young Adult - 18 - 20
Adult - 21 +

XXX - Not hard to figure this one out.

Or something like that

Why not just have

E - Everyone which entails kids and grown ups
PG - Mild language for 13 and up
R - For mature audiences only
X - Which is basically porn but since there aren't any of those or they aren't aloud.

Because nobody writes scripts specifically for 5 and under, it would have to be a pop up script

I agree with Wesley, a rating system like that is simple and would not be hard for people to know where their scripts fit.
