When choosing an avatar, how do you make it to where it doesn't come out stretched vertically or horizontally?

Do you have to shrink the picture you want as your avatar to a certain size?

I usually shrink them down so it keeps the picture and doesn't make it look well dumb.

I hate it when I find a great picture and it's unrecognizable when I upload it.
