SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Getting to know you, getting to know all about you...  /  Let's all write a short!!! (game)
Posted by: Alfred Hitchcock, May 16th, 2006, 5:11pm
Ok this game is inspired from all of my mid terms in school. We get a starting point with a setting or a plot point.

What you do in this game is that I will write a setting, a plot point or a line and then you'll write a short out of that. At the top of your post write down the sentence, plot point or line you're going from in case someone posts something here while you're writing your story. There's no limit to how short or long it can be and it doesn't have to be Shakespeare material either. Let's have fun with this!!! I'll start you guys off now and I'll join the game a bit down the line.

My plot point:

Getting laid.

A bit immature I guess but didn't I say let's have fun with this?

Happy writing!

This is actually identical (with the exception of the deadline) to Dogglebe's One Week Writing Exercise which just completed its fourth incarnation.

You might get some takers, depending on who is up for it. Of course, you didn't give a setting... Check the contests board and you'll find the last four of the writing exercises.

Step 1:  Get off Simply Scripts/MySpace/AIM/AOL/Facebook/etc. and actually go outside and talk to a girl.

Step 2:  Mission Accomplished.

In one post, this thread turns from a game to a tips/joke section.

Well done! :)

Oh c'mon Guy.  You're seriously underestimating the vast amount of boo-tay you can get on sites like myspace.  Sure it's all simulated and you could go horribly blind while growing hair on your palms, but serious boo-tay.

I really have no idea of what I'm talking about.  Just looking for an excuse to say boo-tay, and I've said it.  Thrice!

Thrice?  Hey that's another word that isn't used often enough, kinda like tantamount.  I find tantamount to be a really cool word.  It reminds of this one time when I was just walking down the street, and this homeless guy came up to me, and he was all like "Yo man", and I was like "What's up blood?"  and he said "O Positive", and I was like "I don't know what you're talking about", and I continued on my way until I came to a small store that only sold Chinese antiques and Root Beer.  I didn't have enough money for this vase I really wanted (dude wouldn't budge on the price!), so I settled for the Root Beer.  I think it was an A & W.

Having enjoyed my root beer, I continued on my merry little way, until I came upon this woman.  She said to me "Hey" and I said "What's up Jeannie with the light brown hair?" and she said "I have no idea what you're talking about".  Not to fall victim to the same fate as my homeless friend I said "Nevermind", and she said "Do you like Root Beer?".  Well, having just partaken in sampling the cool beverage, I replied in the affirmative.  And then we slept together.  And then she charged me 50 bucks.  Whore.

Getting laid is complicated.  Never ever do it.  But if you must, please remember that in the world of prositution "Do you like Root Beer?" actually means "Would you like to contract syphillis in the back of a broken down Plymouth Voyager?"

And that's...........One To Grow On

Has anyone but me noticed that there is a lot less participation on these boards lately by some of the more respectable and experienced writers?

Hmmmmm............

Depends on your definition of respectable and experienced.

I think you know what I mean Mike.

You've even posted less and yes! I do respect you and consider you experienced (and I only have to ad this side note because it's you, I'm talking about you as a writer here).

i'd have to disagree with you there tomson, a good portion of the big post counters have all had posts today... most of them are considered among the respectable writers on this site... yes?
Posted by: Shelton, May 16th, 2006, 11:01pm; Reply: 14
Yeah, I glanced around a little bit and noticed the usual active people being, well, active.  I know what you mean in terms of a lull though since I noticed one a few months back.  Sometimes this can be attributed to lack of new unproduced scripts to review, but considering Don posted 28 today, and a good portion of them appear to be by active forum members, activity should increase.

If it doesn't I can continue writing my senseless anecdotes.
Posted by: dogglebe (Guest), May 16th, 2006, 11:02pm; Reply: 15
I think Greg's comments is going to be better than any scripts produced from this.

I believe Tomson is referring to the recent proliferation of threads that are little more than gibberish, such as this one turned out to be. I had no issues with Hitch putting forth his game to see who would participate, even though I had no interest in the topic. There was really no need to create a bash on his virility.

Perhaps we could bring it back on topic, since the whole thing got mean kind of quick. It might look funny, but reread it as if you were Hitch and it was aimed in your direction.

Oh c'mon Guy.

My post was aimed at Guy, sort of.

If people wanna get in on this, I'm down, although nothing could possibly be funnier than the sex scene in last Sunday's episode of Big Love (Great show by the way).  I stand by my previous post that stated we do not have enough comedy contributors on the forum.

Posted by: Old Time Wesley, May 16th, 2006, 11:45pm; Reply: 18
I have to post every day, otherwise I wouldn't be posting.

So how about I take this topic into the right direction, Alfred how about we move this to collaborative and write a script together (Everybody adds a scene) and see what it evolves into or if it gets so dirty Don has to post it and yell at me for bringing it up ha-ha

Think about it, that way everybody wins.

Don actually yells at you? That'd be wild to witness. The phone rings at the Cameron residence. Stephen gets up from his computer to answer it. A loud, grumpy voice can be heard next door. The neighbor sticks his head out the window. "What's that?" someone says. "That's Wesley getting reamed by Don!"

I apologize to the regular members on this board moving away from topic in your thread Alfred Hitchock (Daniel). It seems to me some people only come to these boards to up their post count with pointless drivel and mindless crap. And, I for one am making a formal complaint right now!

Don, I tell you now, I can’t take this any longer, this board is becoming a place of idle banter, mindless chit chat and piss takes and some asses need kicking! If only to gently remind what is acceptable and what is not!

I do not want to read stuff like this in this thread anymore or on SimplyScripts unless it is a specific thread which says you can talk mindless drivel!

Some of the younger members should grow up stop being lazy and write a script or two. Some of the older members tempted to follow these immature pillocks I suggest you also get down to writing reading and reviewing!

These kinds of deviations should not be tolerated at all! I would like to see the board moderators operate with a little more observation now and again and tell posters to keep on topic. This is why Don gave you this responsibility. George did his job about reminding people to stay in topic, and Tomson also mentioned this but in my opinion this goes on way too much on these boards and I'm actually getting pretty sick of it to be honest!

If it doesn't stop I'm going to pull my membership out of this board to the detriment not only of myself as a writer but to those I really value here. All because some mindless fools choose to chit chat about boring, trivial crap which should be dealt with elsewhere quite frankly!

Grow up and get on writing and stop being lazy bastards and stop posting crap just to increase your post count!

I for one don’t want threads containing mindless drivel when the original thread was a pertinent question about scripts and writing!

If you don’t have anything interesting or pertinent to say then don’t post anything at all! Keep the immature, snide comments and silly jokes to yourself unless you make a specific reference to something in an actual post which is reviewing a script or something. Posting one liners with silly “Haha” in them really is kind of childish!

Like I said, grow up and get on with your writing otherwise it’s no good winging you never get a review – don’t you ever wonder why the more experienced writers won’t review your work?  I could offer a reason and I bet it’s because they read your replies in other threads and they know you act silly and stupid and don’t demonstrate the willingness to work hard at your craft. The more experienced writers on this board write more because they spend more time actually writing and not posting mindless drivel!

Think about it, why should they read your work if you only produce one or two scripts and spend the rest of your free time posting stupid immature crap in these boards? If you want your scripts read then I suggest you make a start by stop posting crap and get on reading more scripts, writing reviews and then using your experience of this to help you write your own stuff so you grow as a writer.

If you want to be a screenwriter then start by acting like one.

Jeez!!!

Please Lock this thread!!!

Since when did someone's post count become the end all, be all, of human existence?

And that entire post should have been the beginning of a new thread somewhere else, since it really had nothing to do with the topic everyone is trying to get back to.

Let's call a spade a spade in that regard.

And yes, my first post in this thread was probably senseless drivel, but IT WAS MEANT TO BE, and I'm sure garnered a couple laughs in the process, but just because I posted it doesn't mean that I am not writing or re-writing, or doing the things that a "proper" writer should be doing because I write everyday.

Now, so this isn't a complete waste.....Are we going to run with this or are we picking a new topic or are we forgetting about it?

Posted by: George Willson, May 17th, 2006, 7:14pm; Reply: 25
It's Hitch's thread. If he wants to pick a new topic, it's on him. He did indicate a willingness to go to something else due to the negative attention he got from it, so Hitch, it might be a good idea to restate what you want to do here.
Posted by: Alfred Hitchcock, May 18th, 2006, 4:46am; Reply: 26
*sigh* ok. here's what the point of this thread is: based on something i will write at the bottom of this post you will write the beginning of a short story. doesn't have to be script format. and then the next guy will continue that story and so on and so on. your contribution can be as long as you want it to be.

You have to grow up, Al.  You come here.  You get argumentative with things you don't know about.  You ask a lot of questions, most of which are ridiculous and unimportant.  And then you get pissed when things don't turn out your way.  This isn't your toychest.

Read some scripts.  Review some scripts.  Write some scripts.  That's how this board works!

Er, yeah, that was Alfred Hitchcock that wanted to submit those. For full details on how that went, read Simply The Godfather.  ;D

Seriously, though, for this idea to work, Hitch, you have to be open to anyone saying anything. One person made a comment, and you seem to make it out to be the end of the world. Only one person actually controls the boards, and that's Don. Everyone else are guests in his house. So Phil made a comment. learly there was a frustrated response, but dropping the F-bomb happens to be a pet peeve of Don'ts so I recommend an edit to your post or he might want a vacation from deleting them.

As for your idea, only one person has taken issue with it.

And he wasn't even upset at you. He got upset that the thread went grossly off topic and lost focus. It happens. the trick is to bring it back to the focal point, which has been done.

Why don't you use this idea?

Start by writing the first scene and I'm sure there will be others adding on to it. It might be interesting to see which direction it takes (hopefully this thread is not an indication of where it would lead).

Anyway, the idea I suggested would take this idea, move it into a more appropriate board and give you a way to display your writing talents and get others involved. A fun fast screenplay, read the one that we all did a year or so ago it turned out half-decent.

We should use that board more often; this is for chat about specific things and getting to know you. IE If you have a film online, if you have a picture, to introduce yourself, tell us you're going on a trip. Things that deal with you so we can understand you better.

That is how I see this specific board, the descriptions for some boards are vague and open to discussion.
