Password limited to 8 chars???

Hey, I just signed up for an account. When I entered my password there is a maximum of 8 characters. My usual passwords are over 8 characters long. so I had to use a new one for this site.

I was wondering why it's decided to be limited to 8 here?

That must be part of the upgrade because my original password was 9 characters, though I had changed it to a shorter one quite some time ago.

So is there no way to change it to a password over 8 characters? It's quite annoying having to use a different one just so it fits on this site.
