When i ask this question i don't mean solo musicians only, but also those who belong to a band.

For me, I'm enjoying Steve Winwood.

Johnny Cash :D

His daughter, Rosanne Cash, was on NPR the other day - playing a few songs off her Black Cadillac CD. Sounded great.

Favorite musician: Cobain

I know I already said one but I've just recently gotten into David Bowie. He's amazing. I was gonna start a new thread in here about his music but, nevermind, Hunky Dory is the best album, one of the best ever, and Space Oddity is great also. Anyone who hasn't properly heard Bowie, should do so. He might look kinda weird, but his music's awesome. And so is his acting (The Prestige). Good.

I like most of Bowie's music. There are a few songs that are a bit... bad. Hunky Dory's my fav album too.

David Bowie would be in my top 10.

Wow! I'm really surprised. I mean with all the younger people on here, and it's all the older musicians that are mentioned.  :)

Anyway, my all time favorite (forever and always) is Mick Jagger. I like the way his lyrics grab into my soul.

It's always been a dream of mine to be up on stage with him.

I don't know about anyone else or how they got into the older sort of music like Bowie, but I got into that stuff from films. Wes Anderson (The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic and so on) usually picks British music from the 60's and 70's (as quoted from the IMDb). I guess I thank him for getting me into The Beatles and David Bowie. If it weren't for him I wouldn't be listening to them today. I may even try some Rolling Stones too.

Bowie is awesome.  Ever hear the song "I'm afraid of Americans" he did with Trent Reznor, that song rocks  8)

No i haven't. I only own his greatest hits and Hunky Dory. I've given up downloading and started a album collection. Bowie's on the list!

Yep, music these days kind of sucks, so my dad "the muso" gave me a helping hand.

I'm still getting into the stones, i have a few of their albums but i'm more of a beatles fan. She's a Rainbow is a brilliant song though. And i understand why you'd want to be on stage with him. Watching their live gigs and Rock n Roll Circus i've learnt Jagger is a very energetic man, even today.

I like the Eels. I've got their new album, but i haven't listened to it yet. My favorite song from them is Flyswatter. As for John Linnell, I know all the words to Dr Worm, the best drinking song ever.

Alex,

Did your dad turn you on to J. Guiles? Whammer Jammer... If not check it out. It's jammin'. LOL One of my favorite tunes. Love the harp.

John Fogarty is another fav, too.

For me I will have to pick them from different times.

Today, I find Heather Thompson from the rock band Tapping The Vein to be a very strong vocal musician. Her voice is like nothing I have ever heard recorded before and makes you wish they recorded more than one album.

From earlier eras I would go with Hank Williams (Original) just simply because he is/was a great songwriter and the voice that inspired a generation. Without him we would have never Got Hank Jr and Hank III.

Even Johnny Cash has covered some Hank Williams.

I am not a big fan of Nirvana but the live MTV Unplugged CD is one of my top favored CD's just because they were phenomenal live.

Nope, can't say he did, but i'll ask him. I'd listen to anything with a harp in it!

Eddie Hazel is another favourite, he's in my top ten just because of one song. Maggot Brain, the rawest, emotionally attached guitar playing and its all improvised. He was told to "play like your momma just died". Moving stuff.

I can listen to one or two Placebo songs, but any more and that singer's voice starts to get on my nerve. I love Radiohead though! Also, there film clips are so strange and awesome. I remember seeing one of a guy lying on the ground. People asked him why he was lying on the ground and when he gave them an explanation they all just layed on the ground with him.

Anyone like Klaatu? some of their music is chilling because they sound so much like the Beatles. Their from Canada i think and there was a lot of talk about them. They didn't show themselves to the public for a while so people thought it was actually the Beatles getting back together.

P.S. Cindy, have u heard "We Love You" by Rolling Stones, wow, as psychadelic as they come.

Wow! I never thought I'd see this name mentioned on the board. Awesome band and really funny.

My favorite musician would be Mike Patton from Faith No More, among many other bands. Definitely brings a lot of original ideas to the table no matter what band he's in. He's also pretty much the most versitile vocalist of all time. Seriously, he can do any style of vocals and do it well too. Listening to some of his bands' songs, you'd think they had several vocalists on one track alone. I've heard him do everything from rap to lounge crooning to falsetto to screaming. This guy's a genius.

A close second would be Roger Waters. He was the driving force of Pink Floyd, even if he had to be a dick doing it.

Hell yeah! Mike Patton is one of the few vocalist geniuses of our time, IMO. I actually had the privilege of interviewing him in person for the Roskilde festival when I was just 17. I felt a lot like Patrick Fugit in Almost Famous haha. He was really cool and seemed like a nice guy.

But of course my tape-recorder runs out of tape in mid-interview and I just hear the *CLICK* sound while we're doing it, and I begin to panic. Luckily there was another interviewer present whose tape I could borrow afterwards to piece together the interview.

Well, that was just a small anecdote out from nowhere. :)

Carcass is amazing. They're reuniting this year for some Euro fests. I'd love to see them but I'm not sure if they'll be coming State-side or not.

I tend to keep my favorite musicians and favorite metal musicians separate but they're about on the same level. Bruce Dickenson would probably be my favorite but he's not really a musician (he's a singer). My favorite metal band would be a tie between Macabre and Pungent Stench. Both really original and underrated bands that throw a lot more musical genres than just metal into the mix. Worth checking out if you like the genre.

I might be biased, but there's a reason nobody mentioned him.  Usually musicians have to have talent to be considered a good musician.  I had a girlfriend (of course, she was kind of a hippie), drag me to a Dead concert.  Holy crap.  It was one long three hour song.  The same couple-note riff over and over.  I would rather have somebody jump on my eye with a pogo stick over and over than to even listen to a song of theirs again.  Like I said, I am biased, but there is a reason they only had one top ten song and it didn't even come until 20 years into their career.  No wonder their fans have to trip to enjoy them.

Some of my favorite musicians are:

Billy Corgan, from Smashing Pumpkins
Meat Loaf because of how much emotion he pours into his work.
Avenged Sevenfold has the metal market cornered.

and E from the eels is my favorite of all time.  I'd even listen to him if he did a Grateful Dead cover.

When I tell people this, I tend to get odd looks because, at my age (43), I am apparently not supposed to be into "yoof" music.

"Alright, Still" is the only LP I have ever liked all the songs on (I'm listening to it as I write this!). I like many different artists, from Sinatra to Eminem, from the Beatles to Oasis, but I have never found an album of which I have liked all the songs on it before this.

"It's Not Me, It's You" was not quite as good, but still has a number of fantastic songs on it, including her best one - "22" - as well as "Him", "He's Not There" and the wonderfully obscene "F*** You".

I think her tendency to end up in the tabloids has overshadowed her considerable talent, more's the pity.

Wow, those would absolutely be at the top of my list! Huge fan of Bloc Party (as you know), and Muse are gods, quite simply. I was up at 8:30 a.m. last Monday hunting for a copy of their new album...took me an hour searching up and down the Walworth Road before I actually found one! But definitely worth the wait...cracking record. The Exogenesis Symphony is truly extraordinary.

Have to give a shout-out to Elbow, though. And there was a band from Reading called Morning Runner that I loved. Their first album - Wilderness is Paradise Now - is one of my faves. I waited with excitement for their follow-up...and then they disbanded, citing creative differences with their label! Hugely disappointing. Look them up on Spotify, though - a talented group of musicians.

really? and I thought I was too old to like Paramore (I'm 29) but y' know what? I don't care how many teenage girls love them b/c they did a song or two for "Twilight" -- they're a damn good band!

my current top five are:

Kent (I'm one of maybe ten Kent fans in the U.S. )
Silversun Pickups
Muse
Paramore
The Killers

Also receiving votes: Fall Out Boy, Foo Fighters, Keane, Mew

my all-time top 5 would have to be:

Depeche Mode
New Order
Smashing Pumpkins
The Cure
Nirvana

Also receiving votes: The Smiths/Morrissey, U2, Kraftwerk, Joy Division

of course, this doesn't exactly follow the topic, which was favorite musician but suffice it to say, there's at least one in every one of my favorite bands listed above.

This is a really hard question, but I think, above the rest, I'm in love with John Lennon.

I feel his spirit and I feel very connected.

It's out of my time, but I also feel connected to Jesus Christ, but I don't know of his recent lineage and his published songs.

I think that it's interesting that John and Jesus share the same initials of their first name. But that gets really complicated because "J's" and "Y's" become a bit of a haze if you transliterate from Hebrew.

John Lennon wrote that:

He didn't believe in Magic

He didn't believe in I ching

He didn't believe in Bible

He didn't believe in Tarot

He didn't believe in Hitler

He didn't believe in Jesus

He didn't believe in Kennedy

He didn't believe in Buddha

He didn't believe in Mantra

He didn't believe in Ghita

He didn't believe in Yoga

He didn't believe in Kings

He didn't believe in Elvis

He didn't believe in Zimmerman

And he didn't believe in

Beatles

Of which he was a part

He only believed in Yoko and Himself

And I'm with John

Being reborn from being

A Dreamweaver

I might have been a walrus

But now, dear friends,

We will surely die another dream

Get out of one car

And get into another

Ant that, is beautiful, indeed.

Read the subtitilos in the following video and expand on that.

No creo in anything.

Wow, I share with Sheepwalker and that is always compelling.

To note:

The musical persuasion is within me and I once worked on the guitar a lot. The piano though was my first love and I hope to return, but writing has consumed me like a fire.

There is no book that I open or program that I enter that doesn't excite me and that is always a harbinger of problems because I can't settle myself down.

It's like "Wow! and Wow! and Wow! again and times ten!!! And where does it all end?

I fly around in love all the time. It's a problem. I guess love is a problem and how can that be?

I'd love to see some posts of some of the sexual techno or whatever the hell you calll it that my daughter puts on. I enjoy it very much.
