NO! Fuck Johnny Depp. He'd probably do Freddie Mercury as Keith Richards. Or Michael Jackson.

It's all rumours right now.

It started when someone said something along the lines of "... so I hear you've offered the role of Freddie Mercury to Depp" to Brian May. May denied that any casting has been done, but did mention that he loves Johnny Depp and thinks he'd be a great choice.

The media got hold of this quote, put 2+2 together and came up with the headline that Depp has signed on.

With Jack Sparrow and that weird Willy Wonka I think it's been thoroughly established now (if it wasn't already before those two characters) that there is literally no character Johnny Depp can't play.

Cheers, Chismeister.

Thank you! Most overrated mediocre actor that everybody adores for no reason other than chicks just think he's hot EVER!

It'd be cool if this does happen, though he'd have to wear false teeth. Freddie Mercury had some big chompers. I don't really know how Freddie was, so i cant say if Johnny Depp would do a good job. But he did play a fairly flamboyant rocker in Crybaby. Gee, i love that movie.

Depp did Sparrow as Keith Richards because he thought that's how the character should have been played.  If he does Freddy Mercury, he'll him properly.

I wonder who will do the singing.  I doubt Depp can do this.

Yeah you could tell Depp lip sync'd in Crybaby. Alteast for some of the higher pitch songs. It the more rockier ones he looked as if he was singing, but to sing a 50's rock song and sing like Freddie Mercury are two different things.

Rumour has it that any person likely to play Freddie will most likely mime to Freddie's vocals on the songs. Although, I'm not sure what would happen if they find someone with a good voice.

I can see Depp playing Freddie's personality very well, but I'm wondering about looks. Freddie had two looks - 70's long hair, glam rock and 80's short hair, moustache. Interesting.

Johnny is a world class actor, I'm sure he could pull off the acting, too. Just look at the diversity of his roles in: Donnie Brasco, Blow, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Pirates of the Caribbean, From Hell, Ed Wood and Finding Neverland.

But, I agree, the singing will be a problem because Freddie Mercury was a great singer, you can't just learn that overnight, you've either got it or you haven't.
Johnny could end up with egg on his face if he tries to sing like Freddie.

I'm not too concerned about the looks though. Just look at Joaquin Phoenix; he doesn't resemble Johnny Cash at all, but he did a wonderful job in Walk the Line.

I think if he ever portrayed the laste Freddy Mercury, he would do it superbly. Depp has proven on many occasions he is one of the best in Hollywood.

As a Queen fan I find this very intriguing. I think Cohen will do a fantastic job, but I wonder if there's enough content in the life of Freddie to make a theatrical release?

Check that - of course there is...

Can't wait to see the prosthetic upper denture Cohen will have to wear. :-)

Peter Morgan's writing the script. Which is a great sign.

Finally!

This has been rumoured for quite some time, but there was no script ever completed. There is another script on Hollywoods Black Book (sp?) which I was lucky to read. It was interesting, but not what I thought would fit into the Queen catalogue.

As a huge Queen fan, I am quite excited.

Can't say I'm a huge Queen fan, aside from their classics, but I will say, that I find myself going through a bit of a SBC backlash.  I think he's a talneted guy, but he's in danger of being a one trick pony if you ask me.  This will be interesting in terms of his career path.

That said, he's still more talented than this guy who is definetly a one trick pony.

Wonder if they'll include the epic moment from time when Mercury was being pleasured beneath his piano while writing Bohemian Rhapsody?

That should make for an Oscar-worthy moment.

With Peter Morgan (The Queen, Frost/Nixon) penning the script, this is looking good.

I agree that SBC needs to do something different - and this is the perfect fit.

Can't wait.

So, while Freddy was playing his piano, someone was playing with his organ?

An obvious joke, I know.

Yeah, you should have twisted it around like

:-)

I think this should be fun.  Approved by Queen and cast with someone who seems like a great choice for Mercury.

However, I always thought Russell had done too many tricks.  Wasn't that his big issue?
