Why would an established screenwriter like John August say:

"...it's okay to include a specific song if it's really crucial to understanding the tone-slash-intent of the scene. But you can only do it once per script. More than that, and you're writing liner notes."

Hmmm, his advice was given to a spec writer. Maybe he doesn't know what he's talking about -- perhaps he hasn't read whatever book the "regulars" here have. Given that he's an established writer, he was probably too busy writing (and getting paid) to concern himself with "the rules." Someone should tell him not to do this.
