I'm currently working on a script that takes place in a small secluded town in Montana (I haven't decided whether it will be an actual town or a fictional one, but the population will be something like 1,000).

Now, in the script one of the characters needs to get a hold of someone from law enforcement and I'm just wondering whether to use Police Department, Sheriff's Department or State Police / Patrol / Trooper.

What determines when I should use what? Do you still dial 9-1-1 regardless whether you want PD, SP or State Police?

Can any of you Yanks  help me out here?

Why Montana?  Why not some small town near Copenhagen where you would better understand the culture?

Also, we don't have mountains like they do in Montana anywhere in Denmark (it's flat as a pancake).

Okay.

A small town, like what you describe, would not have it's own police force but would, instead, rely on a county police department.  Maybe even the state police.

Dialing 911 would get you the police that has jurisdiction over the town.

I was actually writing a script that called for the same type information. Mine was set in Alaska though. But I was lucky enough to relatives from North Dakota and, in fact, Montana whom I could ask about local details, that someone like Rob or me just wouldn't know.

I found you can also find a lot of this information online. A lot of local branches of law enforcement have websites that state information like manpower, jurisdiction and even office hours. And then there's always wiki-"I-know-it's-not-peer-reviewed-"pedia.

And if you need a location like a remote small town, there's no way you can set it in Denmark. The country's simply too small to have anything be too remote.
