SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Screenwriting Class  /  Film Advice Needed
Posted by: erin (Guest), August 15th, 2007, 11:44pm
I'm going into my final year of highschool, and i'm required to make a 20-30 minute long film in my communications technology course .. however, i'm not a particularly talented or creative writer by any means, my talent lies in the actual process of making the film, and more .. the artistic direction of film. of course- this means nothing without a solid story/screenplay.

so far,
the only idea i have is very vauge,
it's about a woman who finds herself living a very mundane day to day life, and by some means she stumbles apon her life aspirations she had when she was younger,  ie. to travel the world, etc. which she had not completed .. (prehaps in finding a list of 'things to do/life goals' from her past.)
she then drops everything in her stable, and uneventfull life to complete these goals, the way in which she does this seams strange. as though she is becoming imbalanced to those around her, yet is perfectly justified in her own mind. (ex. to complete her goal of traveling the world .. which she can not realistically afford to do, she instead goes to second hand shops, purchasing posters of famous cities around the world, like paris, and uses a polaroid camera to take her picture in front of the posters..)

hopefully this gives you an idea of what i have in mind,
i need advice on how to roll with this idea, and make it into a cohesive storyline,
with an actual begining middle and end?

any advice is greatly appreciated.
i need to write this/some kind of screenplay soon and i'm getting desperate :)

I think it's workable.

Definitely start out with a few tidbits of her mundane life...no companion, a bad job etc. etc.

Have something finally put her over the edge.  Could be anything, maybe a co-worker wins the lottery or gets engaged.  Something to make her start to question her place in life.

She quits her job, decides to travel the world.

She goes to a travel agent to make plans, but finds out it's far too expensive.  As she leaves, her eye catches the posters on the wall...and that's where she gets her idea.

She gets her posters and takes her photos.  You could end it with her meeting somebody.  maybe a photographer taking odd photos himself.

Just kinda throwing it out there off the cuff, but that's basically what I would do.

It sounds like you have a pretty good beginning. Good luck finishing it. If you have any question on writing a script, feel free to ask.

Good luck!

Yeah, one of the worst mistakes a person can make is not asking for help when they need it. It's a good community here and there's more than enough help available if you need it.

Good luck with the project and with school!

I think you need to ask yourself a few questions to determine what story choices you can make.

How large is your budget?
Do you have any cast or location restrictions?
What genre do you want it to be?
What age of audience are you aiming at?
