CRAPTASTIC!!!!!!!  That's the word I would use to describe this film, this has got to be one of the weakest, dull, and joyless sci fi films that I have seen in a long while.

This is another re make of the body snatchers, I have liked a couple of them in the past, the one  that took place at a military base and the one with Spock and Jack Bauer's dad in it.  I thought those were kinda cool, but this one, felt like the filmmakers took a dump in a bunch of tins, sent them to the cinema's so that they can be flung up onto the screen.

I'm sure everyone knows the plot, aliens come from outer space, infect people while they sleep and they wake up as some kind of zombie, but in this one, they are just vomit martians, that's right, they vomit on you, or in your drinks, then you become infected, when you go to sleep the change occurs.  Who the hell wrote this crap?  Me?  Jesus Pleasus, I mean, ya got Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig in a movie about vomit martians, what a waste of talent.

So ya, Nicole Kidman's ex husband is one of the first to be infected, turns out he has a pretty important government job so most of the government gets infected first, then he pukes on Nicole Kidman, she's infected, but she knows she won't change if she stays awake, and as it turns out her son is immune to the infection because of some disease he has but he has been kidnapped by his puke monster dad, so Mrs. ex Tom Cruise and James Bond try to find him to bring him to some military base so that they can come up with an antidote, but almost the whole country has become vomit martians.

They one good thing in the film is Daniel Craig, he is the only interesting character in the film, too bad he has such a small part, he just pops up from time to time, hmmmmmmmmmmm I wonder if at some time he will fall asleep, you don't need a brain to figure that out.

Then there is a part where Nicole gets ahold of a gun, she is dead tired, everything is a blur, but she caps about 5 alien spew creatures with one shot each, she should have the aim of Ray Charles at this time, but she shoots like Dirty Harry, she's a better shot than Oswald.

The movie has one cool car chase when about a dozen vomit martians are hanging on her car as she speeds through the city, if the movie had more of that maybe it wouldn't be so dull.

The end is just a cop out, there are no twists, no drama, just ends like a fart in the wind.

Well I just saw this.

While I don't think it's a bad film per se, it's a deeply flawed one, and you can tell it had a troubled production.

In its style and tone it's actually a lot like the 78 version. It treats the infection from a very intimate point of view, in that we don't see any government agency combat the virus, so basically we see the world crumble around the main characters. Slowly, one day at a time. The set up works very well but then it runs into problems.

The second act is too much circling and not enough progress, Nicole spends about 70 minutes of the film looking for her son, just running around and calling people, and honestly it's not that exhilerating.

I disagree about how there should be more car chases or shoot-outs, I don't think that's the problem. the 78 version had none of this and it turned out fine. What I think is missing is consistent drama. From the 30 minute mark it would seem the aliens have taken over most of the population, yet they don't really do anything about it till the third act.

Another thing that's kinda shuddy is the editing, or at least how the film treats its pace. It just doesn't flow. there's no dynamic structure in the script.

And the end was terrible. Deus ex machina if I ever saw it. I reeked of last minute re-write. Also how do we "cure" probably 1/3 of the country who has turned into aliens?

The vomit thing surprisingly didn't phase me. But from Jordan's description of events I had imagined they'd be going Linda Blair on everyone. It's more like projectile spit-vomit. It's ridiculous, yeah, but so is the plant thing from the 78 version.

I'm surprised Oliver Hirspiegel couldn't do more with the material, but I imagine the studio was heavily involved.

All in all, the film doesn't deliver, but it's not atrocious. It's just not even close to what it could've been.

EDIT:

Well I just read that the Studio wasn't happy with Hirspiegel's bleak vision in the film, so they hired James McTeague (V for Vendetta) to film additional scenes to make it more action-packed and marketable to an American audience.

That explains it. He's probably resposnbile for the tagged on happy ending as well.

I wanna see the original movie now. The director's cut.

I liked the original IOTBS. That's the only version I've seen. I heard the Donald Sutherland/Jeff Goldblum version is decent though. I might check this one out when it hits video... for free, hehe. Yeah, from what you guys have said, it doesn't sound all that great. I heard this version was piled on with not-so-subtle references to 911/terrorism and elitist George Clooney-esque Hollywood liberalism. I had a feeling it'd be like this from the getgo. Is the political stuff really as bad as the reviews are saying it is?

I don't think so. And I usually pick up on when a movie tries to forcefeed me a political view. There's one scene at the Czech Embassy where they engage in a brief political discussion and the war in Iraq is mentioned, and a few times Bush is seen on TV, implying he's a pod person, but I didn't see anything that really stood out.

I got the same message I always get from a Body Snatcher movie. Being human is being an individual with all the frailties of love and hate etc. So it's still anti-communism, if anything.
