Is there anything more agonizing than the absolutely horrid Emo-tunless-guitar strumming crap plastered on this movie?

I've sat through movies with rap music, country tunes, heavy metal ...but this  breathy-really-can't-sing-or-write-a-good-lyric sub-par neo-folk music was just the worst music I'd ever heard in a movie. That includes rap, by the way.

In general it's hard to use pop music to score a movie. Most times it's done poorly.  Usually it's just music tossed in so the studio can pitch a soundtrack CD. But the "music" used in Juno really hits a new low. It really did nothing to enhance the movie at any point, it didn't heighten any mood at all.  ( keep in mind I'm an old fogey ....and the kids with their hippity hoppin music  * shakes my fist* Stay off my lawn, too!)

Ugh, I agree completley one of my friends consantly plays the CD in her car. I can't handle it.

Out of interest did you enjoy the movie? If not I can see why the soundtrack would bother you because it is tied in so heavy with the theme. From someone who enjoyed most of the movie the nonchalant lyrics and chord missing guitar served to reinforce the movies ideals and really the fact that not everything should be perfect. I would never listen to the soundtrack on its own however but it worked great on screen which was the purpose

On a side note I agree about how hard it is to score a movie with pop music without sounding cheesy, the movie "Garden State" had a great Pop soundtrack IMO

The movie was OK - it was cute with a few good lines and good performances, but not quite the Second Coming and am stunned it won the Oscar for best original screenplay. I'm not a huge fan , but don't detest it with every fiber of my being.

I understand what you're saying as far as the music inside the movie, but - maybe I'm just old - the music was terrible. Overall I'm against using pop songs to score a movie, but when it's well done ("Goodfellas") it's perfect. That's a movie that would not have worked with a standard orchestral score. There were some underscore moments in Juno that accented the on-screen action very well - but in my view, the songs chosen - like the movie itself - were self consciously cute and drawing attention to themselves ( Hi, I can't sing or write, but this is my precious way of expressing how much of an individual I am).

But hey there are 2 CD's devoted to it, so it IS a popular type of music these days.

I couldn't agree more.  I gave the movie 2.5 out of 5 stars.  It was ok, but doesn't come close to deserving all the fanfare it's received.  The soundtrack, on the other hand, simply sucked.

I feel I should point out however, that it's not emo music - it's indie.

I liked Juno a lot but the soundtrack was pretty horrendous. Half the artists sounded like they were trying to rip off Cat Stevens. They failed miserably but you have to ask, who would want to rip off Cat Stevens to begin with? His music belongs in Harold & Maud and no other. On the other hand, I was surprised that the indie assault really wasn't as destracting as I expected. It didn't take away much from the film for me at all.

I agree, as much as I liked Juno, I can't stand that emotionless dribble that was the soundtrack for the movie.

I like soundtracks for comedies/dramas to at least have a little bump to them, and this OST really put me off when I was enjoying the movie.  I mean it fits Ellan Paiges' character well, but that doesn't mean we gotta enjoy that type of garbage, right?

Now i almost feel bad that I enjoyed the music in the film. I even "borrowed" it from the internet to listen to on Itunes.

I thought the Juno soundtrack was awesome and I thought it fit so well with the film... Plus the music was neither emo nor indie but most of it was Anti-Folk Music.

I can understand why people would hate it. I am just a sucker for certain types of music.

   I am on vacation this week, for the first time in many years.  Last night it was late and I thought I'd get a movie, so I went to 7-11 since it was 1 am and got this "movie".  I found the Soundtrack to be a complete disgrace, worse than listening to the Counting Crowes even. (note: Here is a Crowes parody I did  yrs ago, brought back to life via the wonders of youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CMVqpO-XsBg )

    However, I have regained some hope in humanity by finding this thread via a Google™ search, and even registered on it to say thanks to the author, something I rarely do.

   I think this movie was a classic example of crazed Friedmanite idiots coloring the sky blue, and trying to convince us that they've colored it red via a massive $$$ PR campaign.  If they actually had colored it red, we might get some ideas, and we can't have that happening can we?

I finally watched Juno last night and I can understand why some people might not like the soundtrack, as it did feature fairly heavily. But overall I liked it and thought it suited the tone of the movie. As for the movie itself, I guess I was put off by all the hype around it for quite a while, but let’s not confuse the hype around the movie with the movie itself. I thought it was good. Not great, but it wasn't striving for greatness. It was just a good story well told.

It was also nice to hear a pro-life message that didn't resort to preaching or bashing the audience over the head with a political point of view.

I'd have to agree with you 75% of the way as it does feature The Kinks, Sonic Youth and Cat Power doing a nice version of Sea of Love by Phil Philipis also covered by Tom Waits. So, in my opinion, 3 tracks from 19 gives it 15% of decent music, the rest, I concur, tends to grate one's balls very quickly.

In response to the original post: oh yes. I've heard far worse. Way worse. Barb  Wire springs to mind. I watched for erm, research purposes. Ahem. Bag of shite. Thank Christ Marion had a tune on there. Otherwise i may have thrown the fecking telly out the fecking window. I found the Juno s.t. pleasant enough. Especially compared to many movies.
