Recently read a new bio of the mighty Gunners so am having a 'moment' where i  reminisce about their glory days. I read Slash's autobiog but he couldn't remember half the stuff he did!
I've been checking out some old clips on Youtube and these guys still rock! It's easy to forget just how damn good they were 20 years ago.  i don't have any of their stuff on CD so my last memory of listening to them is on the old cassettes!
I will be definitely be acquiring 'Appetite for Destruction' and 'Use your Illusion 1 & 2' ASAP.
Any SS guys have fond thoughts of the Gunners?

Great stuff, me!  My fave song of theirs is 'Coma', the 10 minute epic on 'Illusion'. But they have a heap of top songs. The video of 'Sweet Child O' Mine' is possibly the coolest vid ever shown on MTV. Cheers

mmmm.....

Grrrrr.......

The only "mighty Gunners" I know wear red and white shirts and play in the Premier League.

Guns and Roses used to be good, back in the days when rock-stars all looked like chicks. But not sure I would go as far as mighty! Although Axel Rose is mighty weird.

Slash was always the dude, I don't get the point of the band without him.

As I typed those words, Gary, I was thinking you might have a nibble!  My brother is an Arsenal fan. Years ago, I visited London and brought him back a shirt from the Highbury shop. Myself? A Villa man...yes, a sad one lately after our good form all season has disappeared.
Getting back to the mundane gunners, Yeah, old Axl was, is, a strange one. But when you have bi-polar and were molested by your dad that happens. Slash? Brilliant axeman but very lucky to still be alive. Same with Duff, Izzy and Steven Adler, the other original members.
Interesting story about Duff...in 1989, he gave his brother in law 50k to invest in some up and coming companies. Two of them were Microsoft and Starbucks!  15 years later Duff cashed his chips in to the tune of 15 mill.

PS   Gary, if you were a big fan of Guns n roses, your missus in an Arsenal top, bringing coffee and durries whilst singing November Rain? Damn near heaven...   cheers from the gold coast.

GnR were great, back in the day.  Always a bit "hard" for my exact taste in music, but I definitely loved 'em.  Have all their CD's but I haven't gotten the new one, and based on what I've heard, probably won't.

Funny story or 2 for ya...

I lived in Southern CA in the mid/late 80's.  Always have been a big metal head, so we'd frequently hang in Hollywood...at the Whiskey, the Rainbow, etc.  GnR would play live fairly often, before they "made it".  They continued to play live there, but it was always different once everyone knew who they were.

Anyway, I went on a "Reunion Spring Break" trip to Daytona in 87 (I think), with all my old college buds.  CD's were just becoming popular and I had a little CD boom box.  One of the CDs I brought was "Appetite for Destruction", by the little known band, GnR.  MY friends always thought my musical taste was a bit off, and at first listen, to this, they were quite sure I was whacked. Well, by the end of the week, they all loved GnR, and numerous tracks off that now classic release provided the background to insane situations and crazy stories that are still told whenever we get together.

I think it was 88 or 89 before GnR became a household name, and I remember very vivdly some of these friends of mine calling me up and asking for info on other "up and coming" L.A. bands.  From then on, they never questioned or doubted me again when it came to music.

PS  It was quite sad and difficult to watch Steven Adler on Celebrity Rehab, and even worse on Sober House.  The reality of addiction is shocking when you see what it can do to "good" people.  He's doing much better now and has even formed a new band with a bunch of other 80's dudes.

What happened to the Big 80's?  Damn, I miss them...

Hey Jeff, that's awesome!  So u saw the boys at the Whiskey and Rainbow? Full on.
They used to live in the storage shed where they had rehearsals in those early days. All the major drug dealers in L.A  used to turn up there to score of Izzy! The cops were always there, trying to break up fights, orgies and the like. Even when they signed a record deal, they were still living in squalor. Slash said this made them legit, as they lived the life they sang about. Well, what they could remember...
I first heard of them here in Australia in '88. Appetite was released in '87 but took a year to get to number one! Great days indeed.

while I'm here, anyone in SS land ever see the Beatles live? Or even just Paul? cheers

When i first moved to LA in the mid 90's, i took on a job as a delivery boy for a restaurant in Hollywood. Oneday i was taking a delivery to the 15th floor of the Capital Records building, and as i was stepping out of the elevator, 3 men were stepping in, it was Paul McCartney and two of his assisstants, i said hi, he smiled and said hello...

Also, do you know the song Blue Jay Way? it was written by my favorite Beatle, George Harrison. Blue Jay Way is a tiny, private road up in the Hollywood Hills. George loved the sweeping views of Los Angeles from that road, and it was one of the reasons he wrote the song. I drove there and saw those same views until the private security company kicked me out, i think my beat up 81 Corolla was the reason...

George died in a house on Mulholland Drive, i saw that house...

Nice stories Ayham! Sounds like you are a Beatle freak like me. Yeah, i've heard the 'Blue Jay Way' story, how George was waiting for his friends there. In 1997, i visited Liverpool and saw the house where he was born, as well as John and Paul's childhood homes. I've been a fan since i was 8 and have passed the legacy onto my kids. They love some of their songs. Cheers, man.

Cheers Ayham! Yeah, I saw this on the news. Would've been good if Ringo was there. I couldn't work out why Tom Hanks was there though. Were he and George good friends?  Great line by Eric Idle.  The Rutles is a brilliant movie!

Why has no-one made a movie about them yet?  Their story would be great script fodder. Or maybe a biopic about Axl Rose.  Actually, that's a good idea.  I might write that one day.
