Hi Guys,

Does anyone have links to the kind of things I've mentioned above?

I'm looking for lists of the kind of story beats that are used in traditional story telling. I have an idea that kind of subverts them, but want to have a template so that I can deliberately break them rather than ignore them, if you know what I mean.

Just looking for a brief summary/list, rather than a book. I don't need them expanding on, just the stages.

EG Inciting Incident
     Meeting with mentor etc

Cheers, Rick

Hey Dec,

I'm not sure if this is what you're looking for, but I usually use this structure list when writing. It mentions some of the things you're asking about.

That is actually a pretty broad list, Dec.

George has compiled many of those aspects into a thread entitled "Screenwriting Palette"

Not the most concise list in the world -- hey, it's George -- but the first three posts there should contain most of what you are looking for.

I know.

What I'm looking for in particular is the type of very regimented template you tend to find in books that were inspired by, say, Vogler.

So you get

Pg 1-5 Ordinary world/set up
Pg 6  Inciting incident
Pg 25 Turning point.

Something like that.

Then check out the link in my previous post - that's exactly what you're looking for.

Hey Rick, sorry, in advance, cause I'm only going to be partly helpful here. Apart from what Bert provided, The Wordplay Archives (Terry Rossio et al) used to be an excellent source particularly re "The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations" & other columns such as Points of Style, Risk v Reward, Plot Devices etc.  Alas, just googled it and the site no longer exists. I've got hard-copies of it but it's a lot of info. so, I thought I'd post this up to see if anyone has it on file or CD??

Otherwise google "The Thirty-Six Dramatic Situations" by Georges Polti - plenty of info/links.

Hope this helps a bit.

I have done. It's very useful. ;)

I'm just looking for a few more as well. Ones that are even more specific.

Ideally the kind of thing you get in the heroes journey, like how they'll find themselves in a watering hole at some point and then fight some kind of snake creature underground.

I've spent far too much money on film books. I'm hoping someone has condensed it all onto a nice helpful web page somewhere.

Are you referring to this?

That popped in to my mind when I read the thread title.

Haha. That's awesome. I loved the comparison of Stars Wars to Harry Potter. I imagine that's the detail he's looking for.

Thanks Rob,

I've got this saved.

It's not like I'm trying to be a rebel or anything like that; but I have trouble
with structure and I constantly work hard to stand by it--

"To stand by it strong!" I say!

And then I suck the big banana. And I love it and I cave.

So then the next day happens....

And I think I regret not sticking to my guns.

And I think I don't regret it and I just want to share--

So what's the harm?

The harm is I screw with structure.

And structure means BILLS!!!

Plain and simple!

Simply!

Without the BILLS, ya don't survive!

Cus ya need the money ta live!

;D Structure.

Good thing!
