SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  August 2009 One Week Challenge  /  What is the OWC that is coming 8/21?
Posted by: Don, August 17th, 2009, 10:49am
What is the One Week Challenge?

The One Week Challenge is a Free exercise where you will have one week to write a script (properly formatted) 12 pages or less (courier 12 point font) on the selected theme and genre to be revealed on Friday, August 21st at 11:59 pm e.d.t..

The script must be received by Friday, August 28 at 11:59 pm e.d.t..

Please do not put your real name on your script, however, please use your real name and real e-mail address on the submission form (After the exercise closes you can either have your script removed or resubmit the script with your name on it). Please put "(c) Copyright 2009" on your script.

No gambling! No running with scissors. This is completely Free to enter.

This is only an exercise. There is no prize for winning (after all, we all win if we have fun). There will not be an official judging for the best script (after all, we all win if we have fun). All submitted scripts will be posted anonymously for a week before the writers are revealed.

The Schedule:
August 21 11:59 pm edt - theme and genre revealed

August 28 11:59 pm edt - submissions due

August 29 - 31 - scripts posted without author's names

August 31 - September 5th - review, critique, comment, guess who wrote what

September 6th - authors are revealed.

Additionally, I'm in talks with iScript.com to see if they are willing to audio produce one selected script.

And, I'm also in talks with Norm Sherman of The DrabbleCast to help put a little twist into the August '09 Challenge.  Take a moment to pop over to The DrabbleCast, a short fiction podcast that is often humerous, often bizarre, always fun. With sci-fi, fantasy, wierd, disturbing tales- narrated by Norm Sherman.

Try and figure out what the OWC twist will be.  You'll never guess.  When the twist is reveled, I'm sure I'll anger and alienate just about everybody. - Don

I love the OWCs.

Hopefully there will still be one in October...a horror maybe...

Whether or not I participate in this OWC as a writer, I will definitely read and review as many as I can. I've missed the last few challenges so I'm eager to get involved again.

Yes, there will be an October OWC and it will be appropriately themed and in the spirit of the celebrations held on October 31st.

Which means the genre will be Disney Princess (you know that's a real genre...), and theme will be the seven deadly sins.

All sounds rather good. I've read some of the old ones and was impressed.

I'll be reading, if not participating. Depends on the theme...

Sounds good Don, I'm pumped.

I completely chickened out of entering the last one, so this time I WILL enter, irrespective of what the theme, genre or indeed twist is!

Remember me saying this: I will enter. Do not let me back out.

Just to make sure there's a record of JonnyBoy's promise after the theme is announced.  That modify button can sure be tempting sometimes. :-)

Just a reminder for some of you new guys.  The contest is anonymous.

We generally do not say if we are participating or not.

[The mad mis-quoter strikes again hahaha!]

Yeah, Jonny remember, you've got that 'thing' on - you're all booked up.

Oh yeah! Damn it. Forgot. The...'thing'. Yes.

Completely unavailable. Simply don't have the time to enter. Sorry about that.

I feel like the guy at the dinner table who just ate the fish course with the wrong knife...complete faux-pas. Excuse me while I slip away from the table and cringe in the corner.

I am possibly not-not entering.

It is 50% probable that there is a 75% chance that I may enter.

Either way, the OWC's generally produce some good stuff.

Thank God!  At least there will be one entry.  You will probably be the only person to even try because once the theme and genre are released on Friday, August 21, 2009 at 11:59 pm edt,  I'm pretty sure that there will be a revolt the likes of which God nor man has seen before and mass exodus from the discussion board.  There may even be death threats.  However, now I can wrap myself in the warm glow that there will be at least one entry.

You're doing one of those teaser type intrigue things now aren't you? I can almost hear the head scratching. Well done.

Don't be so jovial Don.

You know if I don't agree with the genre and theme there will be a 10 pond box of anthrax coming your way!!!!

I get the feeling I'm being gently mocked here... :)

Still, to be mocked by Don himself is quite an honour! Do your worst, sir.

Hey, I just realised with the anonymity involved, if i don't have a reference to the Beatles in the challenge, then no one will know which is mine.

Unless everyone else references them...

No, I've suddenly discovered that the genre I've picked is probably the most despised on the site and the theme pretty unworkable.  However, I've already gotten commitment from iScript on an audio performance and Norm over at The Drabble Cast is already working on the twist.  My Big Wheeltm is screaming down the hill and I can't get my feet back on the pedals.

But Don shuuuur does have me curious about this one. Ah love! To fall in love with a new OWC... Could be anything...

Don,

You do realise you're now moving into prime Baltis hype / teaser type territory. Of course you bloody well do. W.D.

An anime musical?

Ducks? Nobody would ever put ducks in their script would they?

To Be continued...

Does the Sequel count as a genre?  That would be an ...interesting... owc.
Posted by: George Willson, August 18th, 2009, 7:04am; Reply: 31
So the genre is already picked, and it is despised. I think I've seen the despised genre before. That would be the Mockbuster, right? Those movies put out by The Asylum? I call Transmorphers II.
Posted by: Tommyp, August 18th, 2009, 7:23am; Reply: 32
I was actually thinking today it might be "mockbuster", George. Random thought, dismissed it straight away. But if it is, I call Glourious Basterds.

My pick is anime, adventure or western. Probably western.

I know. It's an one page contest, the theme a headless woman! AND  the title has to be translated in Masai dialect.

Yes!!!

Probably won't have anything to do with zombies, but we will find a way...

I predict the genre will be...

Wine Making

or

Fungus

I Googled Alan Holman, and discovered a site with 30 Banana Chan scripts.  So I then came back here and searched for Banana Chan in the Series section, and found that Wesley and Mr. Holman had had issues between them?, but no more than that.  So I did a Google of Banana Chan and found out what it was.  Manga?  Anyway, I hope the fella is making a go of it.  He has currently raised zero dollars of the 33 million he's looking for to produce his series, according to a tracker on his site.

The most despised Genre must be comedy, because it's so hard to write.  The theme could be about being positive-minded in online forums.

As I've bailed on the last few OWC's I guess I'll give this one a go.  I may of course regret this when the theme is announced lol.

The real question is which version of Banana Chan you found. The dude has rewritten it so much that he's dug it into a hole. Anyway, Alan was one of those difficult posters around here that is often banned as quickly as he shows up. We also know he does read the board still, so this little conversation just might be read by him.

He's creative enough, but he got himself into a rut with Banana Chan and never really got away from it. His enthusiasm is admirable, but overwhelming if he hangs around too long, since he also never stops about it. We all have our magnum opus, but we can't go around talking about it all the time hoping someone will read it...generally the opposite happens.

It's SO easy to hitch your wagon to that one thing your so sure will 'make it', that you can miss opportunities elsewhere.

@Jeff - Yes, like Frostbite.

One question: This is my first contest and I have never posted a script before on the forum... How one does that? Or how do I do it for the contest if different?

A OWC about the infamous writer of what used to be my favorite series and was ruined into what it is today... doubtful.

I'd have a lot of material to use for the script though.
