Name your favorite 3 bands that no one else likes

These are the 3 bands of which you're a fan, but you've yet to meet or speak to anyone who likes them.  Maybe a few of us will find common ground in our tastes.

For me, it's:

1. Nazareth - I like these guys a lot; they're actually in my top 5.  Sure, Dan McCafferty on good days sounds like a cross between a Faces-era Rod Stewart and Brian Johnson, and on bad days sounds like he's clearing phlegm. And sure, they're not breaking any musical ground. But Manny Charlton plays a great slide guitar, and they actually segue pretty nicely from 3 chord rock n' roll to power ballads.

2. Marillion - I imagine these guys were huge in Europe, but here in America no one knows them.  I'm only speaking of the first 3 releases btw (with Fish).  If you wonder what Marillion sounds like, think of Peter Gabriel era Genesis, but with more emotion and better lyrics.  "Heart of Lothian" still moves me like almost no other song.

3. Screaming Cheetah Wheelies - yeah I know, stupid name. But great band. Awesome actually. I only own the first 2 releases, but that's enough. They had a couple of radio hits in 1994 and then faded away. They had a good cult following; more along the order of God Street Wine than the Greatful Dead, but a dedicated following nonetheless. These guys do Southern Rock, or more correctly, "boogie rock", to perfection. Their sense of melody is unparalleled, and lead singer Mike Farris has some magical moments. "Jami/Sister Mercy" is eclipsed in the best song category only by "Somebody To Love", IMHO...

Mine are mostly prog metal, but here we go:

1. Pain of Salvation - Big huge thumbs up. Okay, I was introduced to them years ago by someone I knew from Sweden, but I talk to him very rarely, and around here in Oklahoma, no one has heard of them. This was the first metal band I ever liked, and it lead me to Dream Theater and a wide range of musical taste that I never had before.

2. Vanden Plas - Funny name for me, but it's another group that's very musically talented and yet, no one I know has ever heard of them.

There are a host of prog metal groups that no one in my circle of friends knows anything about: Rhapsody (of Fire, and a huge, huge, huge thumbs up to them...absolute freakin' genius stuff..it's epic and most everything I like to hear in any music), Royal Hunt, Ayreon, Kamelot (Thanks to Guitar Hero, people do know about Dragonforce now), but I'll move on to:

3. Hilary McRae - I only know about her because I saw a bit on the a morning news show one day, and I was interested in her album. I listen to her album frequently, and she only has one at the moment. I haven't read where she'll have another one or not, so who knows, but the girl is talented enough. Her music is very jazz-ish in nature along with some old school rock. It's great to listen to and a legit style that's much needed in the cookie cutter music biz.

Those are my three (plus four asides).

Nothing wrong with the Go-Gos! At the least, they produced Belinda Carlisle, who had some great songs in her solo career.
I was gonna mention the Bangles too, but they were proabaly too popular to rate in this topic. I used to have a huge poster of them on my bedroom door...

...which probably explains a lot.

I've met people who like Oingo Boingo, but they rank highly as one of my favorites. I mean, how can you go wrong with Danny Elfman on music, lyrics, and leading the band along with his long time orchestrator Steve Bartek right there as well. Between Only a Lad to their last album, Boingo (not Boi-Ngo), you can really hear how composing soundtracks affected Elfman's songwriting style, and the music on each album is almost completely dissimilar.

And The Shaggs... Really, Bert? You're still on them? My pal's name is Foot-foot, so I shot him to put him out of his misery. Sorry. Not hating.

Bionic Jive: Three white guys and two black guys. Metal + Rap = Awesome.

Smile Empty Soul: Stuck in the grunge era - which is what make these guys Rock!

Public Enemy: Elvis was a hero to most but he never meant shit to me you see straight up racist that sucker was simple and plain motherfuck him and John Wayne. Nuff said.

How could anyone not like PE? Hell of a band.

Particularly loved the stuff they did with Anthrax.

1)  Anything by Arjen Anthony Lucasen (Ayreon, and most recently, Guilt Machine...fabulous stuff!). Arjen is a musical genius!

2)  Edguy - why they're not mainstream, I'll never know...they are the Kings of Power Melodic Metal.  Tobias Sammet is a true mastermind...Avantasia is unreal, and anything anyone in this band does is gold!

3)  Pink Cream 69 (or anything that any of the members do).  David Readman is an excellent singer. Dennis Ward is an unreal producer and musician.  Check out Voodoo Circle..WOW, fabulous!

4)  Anything involving Jorn Lande. The hardest working, most talented singer in music today.  Anything this guy touches is frickin' GOLD!  Please, do yourselves a favor and check him out!

I could go on an on, but this is a good place to start!

George, PC69 is awesome!  Easily one of my favorite bands of all time.  Their earlier stuff had Andi Deris on vocals, who is now Helloween's vocalist. With Deris, they were a bit wilder.  Readman is a classic singer, and their sound is timeless.  Really, everything they've done is fantastic.  Weakest records by far are "Change" and "Food for Thought".  They were Readman's first 2 with the band, and it looked like things had gone wrong, but the boys righted the ship and from there, every release has been awesome!

You should also check out Alex Beyrodt's Voodoo Circle.  It's 1 of the best releases of 2009.  David Readman does the vocals, and the music is just top notch.  Has a late 70's vibe to it, but just comes of as timeless.

BTW, have you heard Guilt Machine yet?  What do you think of it?  I think it's as good as Ayreon.  Awesome stuff!

For me? Drivin' N Cryin was a big favorite during the Athens revolution of the eighties (Stand up and Fight for it and Scarred...But Smarter is still a personal statement, which I would have tattooed if I were not allergic to the stuff...

I also liked Shriekback in the same period, along with Peter Murphy, Souixsie and the like...

"Sister Mercy", "Magnolia" and "Father Speaks" are 3 of my favorite songs of all time.

I remember Drivin' and Cryin' from their one hit (forget the name, but I know I liked it).

Brother Cane is similar to SCW - their debut was pretty good as well.

Or even the related Deitiphobia, for that matter.  True, someone did like Massivivid back in 1998 when they won the Dove award for best hard Christian rock. But some of my Christian friend could hardly stand them, Fold Zandura/Mortal or Wedding Party let alone the now popular P.O.D. Massivivid tried for a follow up "Dressed To The Nines" but nobody listened but me.

I think one of the most underrated bands in existence, besides Echo & The Bunnymen; whom my band takes massive influence from, is Paul & The Patients.

Check these guys out... They are absolutely soul shaking. All of their stuff. Between Space & Clouds is beautiful, by the way.

Not sure about bands that nobody else likes, surely even the most hated singer in the world has a Mum or sister who listens to them?

I was at a gig once, years ago in London and the support act blew me away, one of those moments where you see someone and instantly recognise genius and yet cannot understand why nobody else sees it.

The Mull Historical Society, effectively a one man band, I think he is one of the most underrated song writers around.

Seems I cannot read thread titles properly. Three bands. I guess Radiohead don't count do they? A few people like them.

I have always had a great fondness for Elbow, at one point not popular at all. A brilliantly original band who have recently, and deservedly, found commercial success.

And Turin Brakes, another underrated band who write great songs with just fantastically oddball and wonderful lyrics.

Hmm, it's hard to think of artists that I listen too that I think people like to think suck.

Lol.  Definately on distant planets.  I like a lot of music, actually.  I hate a lot of music too, though.  Those were the ones that I liked back in the mid-90's that no one else was really talking about that have stuck with me through the years.

I don't mind some of Arjen Anthony's music, but the vocals and lyrics are what always put me off his stuff.

Never really listened or heard of the others you had mentioned.  I'll have to check them out.

And Rob, if you're out there... I've always loved Smile Empty Soul.  And 90's do rock.  I wish I was in my mid-20's in the 90's.  Guess I was born a decade too late.  I feel cheated.

What would you expect from an "old" 80's metalhead, anyways?

I can't think of very few albums and bands that I really, really like from the 90s. The Screaming Cheetah Wheelies are one. Candlebox is another. Maybe the Raconteurs - Broken Boy Soldier was an awesome album. But the one word I attribute to '90s music is "inauthentic". It either all sounded like coffeehouse crap, or it was trying NOT to be coffeehouse crap, or it was slick and commercialized like it was trying to get airplay...

Oh, the John Butler Trio is another one that rocks from the 90s - or are they more recent than that?
