SimplyScripts Screenwriting Discussion Board  /  Questions or Comments  /  New here (sort of). Where to start?
Posted by: MPaige, January 23rd, 2010, 9:06am
Hey everyone. I've been visiting this site for a while but haven't really being active in the community.

Where to start? there seems to be so much exciting stuff going on: the collaborative project, OWC, various threads that seem appealing to me, as well as, of course, the unprotected scripts category.

I am, of course, working on a script that I am basing on a narrative I obtained the rights to, but I'm still in the very early story structure development stages of that. So I don't think it even qualifies as a work in progress yet.

Nevertheless I want to get involved and get to know people around here.  Where in the world to start?

Welcome to SS, MPaige. I hope you find your time here to be protective...er, productive. ;)

Florida and Ontario? That's quite a commute.

Hey MPagie, welcome. Things to look out for / have a look at:

- Simplyscripts Radio, which will give you an insight into some of the core members here (you can link to it from the home page)
- The upcoming OWC, which will be a great opportunity to integrate yourself and have a crack at a fun challenge
- Start reading! Look out for the 'SoulShadows' series of scripts, all of which are written by established community members. Everyone loves a member who gives a good review, so that's a skill worth having
- Don't be afraid to speak up in an off-topic / film review / screenwriting topic thread that interests you!
- Do you have a script of your own posted here? Maybe set up a review exchange thread.
- Give us a name! Do you like to be called M? Paige? Or something else altogether?

That's a start. Be respectful, show an interest, return your reads, don't be afraid to express (and back up) your opinion and you'll fit right in!

Aww. The shower rooms are my favourite spot.

Just stay outta the golden ones. And the brown one is for very special interest only.

Welcome to SS. Have fun.

It's my belief that an individual must journey on their own path in anything.

Whenever a methodology comes out on anything, someone comes along, challenges it and makes change.

Any kind of art or science is an example of this.

My advice is to explore what feels right for you and always ask yourself questions about
what is working and what is not working. And time, what feels right at what time.

There are many good screenwriting books, but they are just books. Living writing and studying writing are two different things.

Hope this helps,

Sandra
