I just wanted to let you guys know that if you want to see a really great documentary, "Anvil: The Story of Anvil" is fantastic.  I went through such a roller-coaster ride of emotions while I was watching this.

And the reason why I thought it was personally quite pertinent to post on this board, is because I felt a lot of similar emotions (as someone trying to make it in film) to the main characters. Granted, they've been going at it a lot longer than I have, but I still could easily empathize with them.

So if you've got 80 minutes, I'd highly recommend checking this one out.  Definitely for anyone who's ever tried to reach for a dream.

I thought they were a fake band like Spinal Tap?

It's a real band?  Didn't seem so from the commercials I saw for the documentary.

You know, when I sat down to watch it I was about 4 minutes in and I said to myself "There's no way these guys are real", and I went and looked it up.  Sure enough, they're real.

While the film certainly has Tap-esque moments (I'm sure their lives beyond the film do as well) they are definitely real.

I thought this was great too. I was completely unaware of Anvil before I saw them on The Tonight Show (y'know, the good one, with Conan). It was a great performance, they seemed so full of joy and appreciation, it was hard not to get caught up in it. After that I found the documentary and loved it. I did some searching on YouTube and found a handful of songs that I really like too.

A couple I like:

They played this first one on The Tonight Show:

I watched this one last week.  I'm not one for reviews, but I did enjoy it and would recommend it, especially to people who liked "American Movie".

I think the difference between this and American Movie (although that's a great film too) is that the guys from Anvil were actually talented.  I don't know how many people are in the "Mark Borchardt's a great filmmaker" camp, as driven as he was.

(Side Note:  I met Mark Borchardt and came to find out he blew all of his inheritance money that was supposed to go towards his film.)

This was a great documentary.  Never heard of these guys and they were before my time, but, yeah, they were a serious band.  So serious that this movie has interviews with Slash and Lars Ulrich that say Anvil was one of the most influential metal bands.

Watching old video of them, you can easily see why some people call them the real Spinal Tap.  What adds to the awesomeness is the fact that the drummer's name is actually Robb Reiner.

Many great scenes, including one club owner who tries to pay them in goulash.  But it's just cool how these two guys stuck together and are finally getting their due.

Dressel, bless. Here is a thread I can finally get into.

Spinal Tapsters and Bad Newsers are one thing,

However. Big Bottom and Warriors of Ghengis Khan are amongst the finest rcok songs ver written. In my humble, as always,

I remember Anvil, bless.

They are living the dream. As painful as it is.

Personally, I moved on. But I do admire tenacity. They have that and more.

"Big bottom. Talk about bun cakes, my girl's gottem."

Priceless. And genius.

N0w. Anvil almost get there. Good lads, tenacity is their speciality. I wish them nothing but the besta luck. All things conisdered they seem to be doing okay. Long may it continue. Oops. Time for bed. Night all. Sweet dreams, I hope.

i saw this movie about a month ago and i too, highly recommend it. its very real, emotional, and personable...which is suprising for a doc about metal bands. you get a glipse of two best friends who are so passionate about what they do and what theyve done in the biz, that theyll do anything to escape their mundane lives - in order to get a taste of the success that they once had. its actually a really sad story at times.

and the whole tour they went on was fucking hilarious. overall a really well put together doc with a lot of heart

I saw it a few weeks ago and I agree, it's quite well done. I felt so bad after watching it, that I went out to HMV and bought the new album "This is Thirteen". My metal days are behind me, but I felt I had to do something to support the band.
