Greetings everyone......

I just wanted to say hello to everyone out in SS land.  I'm a new Production company located in beautiful wine country in Central California.  I've been perusing the forums for quite some time, and I've finally decided to speak up.  

My name is Johannes S. Beals and I'm looking to do some creative work.  I'm transitioning from over a decade of experience in theatre (background in Directing, Tech, Acting), to film.  I'm looking for some quality shorts to hit the fest circuit with, as I would love to have that blockbuster deal, I'm a realist and am willing to take baby steps.

I hope that I can befriend some people here and we can all help each other in the end.

Welcome to the boards; hope you find something useful.

To assist you with that aspect of things, you should specify the sort of script or genre you gravitate towards.

A 5-page script or a 20-page script?  Horror or comedy?

Sometimes it helps to winnow things down a bit, lest you get buried by good intentions.

I'm looking for a short, 15-35 pages.  I like to think outside the box a bit, to have a story with a message/life lesson (good or bad).  I'm open to almost any genre, with the exception of SciFi and Horror.  I'll be mainly shooting on location, so getting something of that caliper is not an option right now.

I am not sure why you think a Horror script would break the bank, but if that is your only problem with the genre, I would encourage you to reconsider.

Horror is perhaps the most popular genre there is, and a low-budget horror from one of our own (P. Clarke) is currently making the festival circuit worldwide as we speak -- and there is plenty more low-budget horror to be found here.

Another good option.  If you find that you like a particular author's "style", it never hurts to approach them with an idea of your own.

To clairfy on my issue with the "Horror" genre is simple.  I personally depend on a lot of feelings when I do anything artistic, and when it comes to 'Horror' I'd like to be a bit more speciic.   Thrillers and Mental game type of 'Horror' films are fine with me.  Anything to make an audience member to think/question what is going on is one of my goals in film making.  On the otherside, Slashers and bloody flicks literally evoke no response for me, and never have.  I just don't care for the excess use in films.  Stories can be told so many different ways, but I feel (and yes this is my personal opinion) that it's not needed.  I know we will not agree on everything, but that is what makes this world so great.  It gives us the ability to challenege and debate with eachother.

I will definately take this into consideration if I cannot find something already written that doens't jump off the page at me.

Thanks everyone for letting me within your circle.  There are a lot of scripts coming my way, and I'll be taking the next week or two to read them all.  I will be in touch one way or the other.

Since you're considering horror, might I suggest you look at one I wrote:

or another equally dark script

Dreams in Dust and Marble  A young woman struggles to save her insane world.

I can understand that, Johannes, and feel the same way, for the most part, as you do. If blood and gore is required to get a reaction, then the story is a piece of shit.  With the right people, however, you can have a thought-invoking horror script where people feel for the characters.  

I wrote four horror shorts; three of them was produced; one is making its rounds in the film fest circuit.  I feel that each of these scripts have what you (and other filmmakers) are looking for in a script, despite the fact they are horror (one being a vampire short and another being a zombie short).  The point is, genres shouldn't be off limits; stories should be.
